Dog Acting Differently Post anesthesia (cross post)

After 2 years of struggling we decided to have our 3 year old's tail amputated in late April.  He did very well with recovery, was  ready to come off of pain killers almost immediately, no whining, or pain post surgery.  Healed beautifully, and finally finally stopped scooting and itching.  However, he began to bark all the time (never ever did this before), and had about 10x the energy.  He also began humping my husbands leg, and jumping up on him all the time.  He had done very well with the addition of our first baby last June.  However, with all this activity, and knowing that the baby would soon be more active with the dog, we decided to get him neutered in late May.  Again, he did wonderfully with the surgery.  However, the behavior hasn't changed.  He is barking, is never ever tired and relaxed even after a good hour outside (this used to be enough for him for 1-2 days.

I have heard about people feeling "off" for extended periods post major surgery.  Anxious, tired or not themselves.  I'm wondering if anyone has heard of a similar phenomena in dogs?  Vet hadn't heard of this, but thought that, perhaps it could be.   We are at our wits end.  Any suggestions?  I haven't posted in ages, but used to and always found everyones suggestions so helpful!

He probably feels like a new dog

I am sure he was in chronic pain from the tail infections. Life is different for him now.

I would keep up the exercise(weather permitting) and while exercising, teach some self control skills. Have him sit before throwing the ball, recall, down etc., Sit/wait before getting fed, sit/wait entering and exiting doors, don't allow or acknowlege pushy behavior like jumping-turn and walk away.

Basically, re-train him.

I agree, I bet he feels a thousand percent better.

You will need to do what Lynn says and just basically retrain him. Don't allow any of the pushy behavior, ever. It will only increase until you have a very pushy dog!

He's reborn!

I agree with the others, he probably has so much energy now and is feeling so good, he doesn't know what to do with himself!  I also agree with the others that he may need to be retrained a bit.  Maybe you could go to "school" with him.  Now that he's feeling so much better, he'll probably really enjoy the activity - and won't even know he's there to learn manners  :)

Thanks, I think you're right.

The onus is on my husband, as that is who he is really pulling the line with.  He knows who will cave in ;)

I knew I could find a reply.  Thanks!
