sorry this is a copy from med forum...thanks
Dear all,
its been a while, hope all is well. We have been so busy with our old lady , now officially 15 year old kelpie, Gabby. The dr. said that she would probably only last another 1-3 months because of an enlarged liver/splein... but thanks to all of you, Gabby has gotten better for now and gotten over that super diarehea hurdle. Now she is just thin, and losing weight, dr. says because of age and the disease probably.
unfortunately, Gabby fell down a week and half ago, and ended up pinching her nerve on her spine.. so now her back left leg wasn't working anymore. We thought that this might be the end of Gabby, but the dr. put her on some new drug, dexamathadone (sp?), and he said that this was it.. if it didnt help her regain strength/feeling in that leg, then there was nothing else he could give her.
so we took 7 days worth of pills, and now gabby seems to be getting better, she can take a few steps on her own, but we are still carrying her around, and assisting her every few hours to pee and poo. she cant get up on her own anymore.. but she is trying to. so i got 2 more weeks of pills..
it's really hard because one hand, we dont want gabby to live a life not worth living and not be able to walk around as she did , but dr. says she is probably not in pain, plus our lives have been put on hold to accomadate her new needs and schedule (she finally gets the new pee schedule, we will have to burn this rug once she is gone!)... but she is still totally perky, happy, now she barks when she wants something because she knows she cant walk there on her own! so how can i put her to sleep if she is still so happy and thinks everything is normal? she just can't walk, thats all.
so i know i might be crazy , but i was looking around and i think i am going to try a doggie wheel chair. it is expensive as hell ($500!) , but even if it gives her last couple of weeks or even a month , hopefully 2 , some more meaning and funtimes by being able to go down the street again.. i am going to do it!
i have done research and i think i am going to order the k9carts version, with extended front wheels, as opposed to walkin wheels, eddies wheels, and someother brands..
does anyone have any experience with this? any recomendations?
thanks for listening, here are more pics of the ladies...i can tell my bully kibby knows something is wrong with gabby, she has been sticking closer to her lately.
sincerely, christine
wheelchair
Sorry no experience, but I'm concerned about the stress on an elderly dog trying to adjust to it. Hopefully it would work out fine. What does the vet say? Perhaps there is a yahoo forum for dogs in wheelchairs where you could get some advice. Good luck.
thanks! we thought about that too...
the vet says she still has enough spunk and pep in her step to try it and see. its sad because she is sitting here wanting to move and get up and go because she can't .. so we are stuck either way...if she doesnt like it, i will send it back.. but if she does, it will be worth it for us to have her have even a little walk here and there or trip to the park
sincerely, christine
