Do your bullies ever just randomly start licking the carpet, their bed, the couch, or even the air obsessively? I've had Sissy for about 7 months and she's done this for some time now. It's like she gets bored so she just starts licking and she will do it for several minutes before losing interest. Sometimes she even does it when I'm petting her, she'll just start licking my leg and wont stop till I make her stop. My vet says it's a compulsive behavior, but I have no idea what is causing it. She's not a big fan of toys, has to be in the mood and then it's like she'll play with it for a couple min and go back to either sleeping or licking something. I tried getting her a bully stick once and she swallowed it whole! (she did barf it back up a short while later but I've been afraid to get her anything like that since) She loves stuffed toys but after she chewed the leg off Mr Racoon and swallowed it, I've been getting her tougher stuffed toys that don't seem to interest her as much. (there was a Mr Racoon II but my Shepherd chewed through it lol)
Anyone experience anything like this with their dogs?
Yep we went through a licking
Yep we went through a licking phase. Vern did it for a few months - I wanna say around 6 months old. He like to lick the furniture, pillows, my boyfriend's legs, and he would suckle on a stuffed toy we had (until I hid it). I even caught him licking the wooden furniture - thought maybe he liked the taste of the furniture polish? I corrected him if he was licking on the furniture or somehting inappropriate....typically substitute an allowed item.
Vern is now VERY fond of a particular bone. I don't know what they are, they are a natural hard bone and they are very dense. He will spend hours gnawing on them. I have several scattered throughout the house....sometimes he'll break off a piece that's maybe the size of my thumbnail and i take it away. I also watch to see if he has chewed the bone in a way that will allow a piece to break off soon...then i'll break it off so i don't have to worry about him swallowing it. I never let him have the bones unattended.
Maybe keep trying different toys/bones. :)
Good luck
YES....omg
Fatboy licks the carpet ALL THE TIME. In fact, he's doing it right now. gah! drives me nuts.
Fatboy aka Stinky :)
you arent alone
Gizmo (almost 2 now) licks the furnature and it really gets on Dottie's nerves.... only bothers me, when I sit down in a wet spot :P
But its leather so I just figured that was why. If I come out of the shower, she'll like any part of my body that isnt clothes, feet, legs, arms... I have to immediately put on a shirt and socks or the licking starts immediately LOL
The air, Check
The Furnature, Check
Her People, Check
Floor Check
Carpet Check
shall I go on ? :LOL
Last steps taken May 26, 2014 -- Been rolling along ever since . . . .
Good to know
Jax is a licker--he will lick the rug, the couch, my leg... Things you thought you would never say---stop licking me!
Lyn
Agree with all of the above. Sadie has been doing it for 11 1/2
yrs. She has many toys and bones, but I guess the carpet and the couch tastes better... Go figure.
Sniffer
Mine aren't compulsive lickers...but sometimes MacKenzie will lick the air (I think its when his tail is bugging him) and he is a big nose licker if I put stuff on it. He hates the nose greased up.
Ester loves to lick my legs when I get out of the shower and she licks the water in the shower door rail when I'm showering. It's actually kind of funny to see her little tongue squeezing under the shower door.
Kohl is a sniffer. He likes to sniff the carpet. He smashes his whole face/nose from lower lip to ears into the carpet and sniffs in real good. It drives me nuts. Oh and he is an ear licker. Mostly licks MacKenzies ears. I have to stop him cause this drives me nuts too.
Well, it's good to know Sissy
Well, it's good to know Sissy isn't the only one hehe:)
