Chewing
Submitted by sitartzm on January 13, 2012 - 12:21pmBrewer has become the chew master. I can not take my eyes off of him for like 10 minutes otherwise he starts chewing stuff. I went to go and snowblow just now and came inside to find that he chewed the power cord right off of an electronic. Any suggestions on what to do or ideas on why he is doing this. Anything will help.

If he can not be trusted for 10 minutes, he is a danger not only to the house but to himself - if he would of chewed the powercord through, and it had been energized - it could of lead to something more than just a tingle mouth :(

Now if he is crate trained, then use the crate when you go out while he is in this stage, until he has earned the trust back -
Bitter Apple is great on things you dont want him chewing on, but it doesnt last real long - I catch Gizmo with something other than a toy in her Mouth, its a strong *NO* and I put one of her chew toys directly in her mouth.
Nylabones - antlers are great to chew on - never rawhides

He is crate trained, and I use it all the time when I leave the house. Just didn't think of it when I went outside. But he will just start chewing on stuff while I am inside also. I used the firm no, and take away whatever it is he is chewing on that he is not supposed to. But for whatever reason he just hasn't learned. What is the Bitter apple? Do I purchase that or make it? I am hoping that this is a short term thing that he is doing. He never used to chew stuff.
Bitter Apple is a product - look at pet stores
its literally that,, very BITTER - they get a taste of it, and they (usually) stop chewing what they were chewing on.
look at petsmart, or petco and look for it under training aids.
