Best time to neuter

I've decided that we will be getting Jack neutered but don't really know the best time for bulldogs to have it done. When we had our english mastiff, we were told that its best to wait until the dog is 2 yrs old to allow for him to fully grow.  Are there any pros or cons to having it done early or waiting until later?   We had discussed leaving him fully intact because the breeder said he had the possibility of being a show dog and would like to have shown him herself if he had potential.  I'm thinking it will be best for everyone if we just get Jack neutered though.  I'd like to get it done before Jack feels the need to hump everything and mark his territory but want to do what's best.

Marking and Humping

IMO humping can be corrected with consistant training and neutering doesn't always fix this.  You do!  Heck bitches hump too.  As far as marking my boys all mark (not in the house) but each others pee so I honestly think that is just natural instinct, being a dog.

What I will say is that if you are having BIG problems with these issues and marking in the house then I would neuter younger then older.  IMO you should wait until at least 1 yr. my contract recommends 18 months. My puppies are sold on limited registrations but I do have a young male that I placed in a pet home that is pretty nice that I may show next year if his owner is still up for it.  The one thing with bulldogs is they don't mature until they are 2-3 years so lots can change.

So 1 year, unless major problems or you have an intact bitch. If you aren't having any troubles with him I would wait until he is around 18 months.  If you are having troubles then 6 months is the youngest I would do.

Some say it affects their development...I personally don't believe this. I think if they are going to be big boys with big heads then this comes from their parents and pedigree.

ugh, suchhhh a difficult decision, isn't it? I don't want to

be too long-winded....LOL.....(I sometimes tend to ramble and give verrrrrry long answers!)....

I will just tell ya that Meaty's Daddy and I angsted over this topic (mainly because we read how "tricky"

anesthesia is for our sweet bullies), but also, hubby was VERY concerned about the growth issue.

We go to a VERY knowledga-bull vet who we trust fully, and he said one year was fine.....BUT, we

waited and waited.  Once we got Sophie this May, Meaty was 2 1/2, so we were no longer concerned

about hurting his growth, and I didn't want him trying to mate with her, etc....so we went ahead and did

it then. Little guy did GREAT, our vet uses dissolving sutures, so there was no follow-up visit,

and I dunno about other bullies (I posted about this before his surgery),

but Meaty would not have needed one of those "Elizabeethan" (sp?)  collars to keep him from licking

the area because there's NO WAY he can reach there!  (poor guy!)

One interesting thing, our vet gave Meaty four pain pills----to be given one per day for four days.

It's called "Rimadyl".....I've talked to other peeps who have different doggies, and their vets gave

no pain meds for neutering OR spaying......I'm so glad our vet did, ESPECIALLY because I've read

bullies are notorious for hiding their pain, so we wouldn't really know if he was in pain either way....

so it was nice to give him the Rimadyl just in case.....

P.S.....When I was researching about when to spay Sophie, I thought it was SO interesting to read

that unlike us human gals, girl doggies don't need their estrogen like we do....must be nice! LOL! :-)

Pain Management - We ALWAYS select this for Gizmo

When she was Spayed and when she had her Tail amputated, we 'paid the extra' for Pain Management (Pain Pills) Was she effected by pain? I do not know, however, I do know this, I personally do not like pain, so I asked myself the question - Would I want pain relief? and the answer is YES (I'm a wuss when it comes to pain) LOL -

We had Gizmo Spayed at 11 months... unfortuately she decided she just had to go into heat a few days before her surgery, a few more $ $ $ $ due to that. :/
