BCA Statement to the recent biased articles

The Standard of the Breed describes a dog that is healthy and strong, able to move in an unrestrained, free and vigorous manner. Its nose should be large with wide nostrils to ensure its ability to breathe. The breed should not be vicious or aggressive, but rather resolute and courageous. Its attitude should be pacific, dignified, equable and kind.

Its coat should be gloss and with brilliant color. The forelegs, although having the appearance of being curved because of it musculature, should be straight and heavy boned.

As with any species, even closely related individuals may vary from the ideal description. However, the conscientious breeder strives to produce dogs that come most closely to this ideal.

The Bulldog Club of America is dedicated to preserving the breed and to continuing to work to improve the health of the dogs our members breed. To that end, we have implemented several approaches to achieve this end. BCA supports health research to find and remedy the underlying causes of diseases found in the breed and we have established a foundation to provide funds to support this vital research.

BCA also encourages health testing of the sires and dams used in breeding future generations. We provide opportunities for owners and members to health test their dogs in a variety of ways and have established recognition programs for those who participate in research health studies and who perform regular health testing on the dogs they own.

Did you read the comments...

posted on the NY Times website under the article?  Unbelievable.  I really wish the Times would have discussed the puppymills, pet stores & Amish that are breeding sickly dogs & selling them :(

I can't even get started on this.

We should all get together and write a response to

the unresearched article.  Something as a "resonse to" type of thing.  People are too lazy to research anything these days and apparently so are "reporters".

Cathy - I can't read those comments

There are so many ignorant dog owners that make such ridiculous comments.  I can't get started on it either.

I showed Appaloosa's national and also raised babies for 30+ years and it was always like eeewwww those are the ugliest horses with no tails and roman noses.  But those idiots that made those statements only saw the crap that was being bred, not the beautiful horses that were in my barn that had tails to the ground and full manes that had to be shortened and thinned, with beautiful heads.

I don't know why I always end up with something controversial.  I guess I appreciate the unique qualities of both.

But I will say that there are many bulldog breeders that need to get their act together and straighten up their way of thinking about health testing.  I remember a few years ago when Patti was active on David's board and her push for health testing and all the push back she got.  Then a few years later we have E taking the credit for the health testing.  Patti has been having hips xrayed and trachs xrayed for years.  Those breeders just poohoo'd her.

I keep telling these pet owners they had better start getting ready to have their beloved bulldogs extinquished.  It is coming folks.  The human society will be pushing for it.  So when you buy from a miller or BYB that is not doing anything for this breed you are helping those people to clear the way for your Bulldog to become extinct.

It was unbelievable

to read some of those comments. But,  since the article was totally biased, it makes sense.  The old saying "don't believe everything you read" certainly holds true in this case.

I agree with you 100%!!

I really dont think they should of ever

printed this in the paper. did you see this. I got this in and e-mail that said to forward from another group. from Robin Stowell  BCA Executive Committee.Dear Colleague.... AS you may know , the New York Times recentlypublished (on line Nov 23 and in print Nov 27) a lengthy article that seriously misreperesents the bulldog and all that we strive to achieve in our breeding programs. The reporter working on this article approched the BCA last summer, and members of the the Exective Committee spent hours providing him with information about the breed, and  the Bulldog Standard and the BCA. REgrettably, very little of this inforormation was included in the article.  THe day this piece was published online, we pulled together a team to respond immediately  to the New York Times, including posting a comment on the New York Times Magazine web site, sending a letter to the editor and posting a statement on the BCA web site. WE also are working on an op-ed piece for submission to the Times.  Longer-term, it is clear that BCA needs to do more to  educate the public about our breed and the bulldog Standard, or our beautiful bullies as we know them, will be in jeopardy. As the nationaL Organization for the breed, we will take a leadership role, but we cannot do it alone.Over the coming year,we will work to develope a proactive communications plan that will include tools that every member can use. It  will take the efforts of the divisions and all local bulldog club to spread the word. How ever,it is important that we do so with one voice. to that end, we ask that you do comment direcly on public social networks or to the New York Times about this article and, if you are contacted by a member of the media, please refer the inquiry to a member of the Executive Committee. their contact information is listed in the BCA Membership Dicectory.  Thank you for your help and support. sinccerely Robert W. Rodenski.             Now that the e-mail I recived. we are not a social netwrok we are more than that they need to understand also what the dayily member of BDW is.
