AKC Popular Dogs

Bulldog is number 6 for 2011 and 2010.  At least they are in the top ten.  In 2001 they were 19th.  The French Bulldog is 18 now, but in 2001 they were 64.  I think we should all get these numbers higher.  Everyone needs to go out and get as many bulldogs as they can (without being an animal hoarder). :)

they should always be and

they should always be and stay #1 ...because they ARE #1

no other breed comes close!!!

notice the objectivity and impartialness of my statement? lol

Unfortunately

being a popular breed is not a good thing.  I would be happy if they dropped down to 30.  The problem with being popular is the BYB and puppy millers breed, breed, breed and ruin the breed. They don't breed discriminately and have no consideration for health temperment and breed standard.  They just want money...so the breed suffers, badly and and we are already seeing the reprecussions of this.  Rescue has taken in way more bulldogs in the past 5 years then you can even imagine.  I could probably pull numbers and give you an idea why being #6, #1 is actually devistating.

The puppies coming from millers are such horrible quality they don't even look like bulldogs.

So please; NO people should not go out and buy bulldogs because they are popular.  That is absolutely the WRONG reason to by a dog.

My thoughts exactly!

Every word you said is true.

Top popularity is not

Top popularity is not necessarily a good thing. In many cases it means indiscriminate breeding especially "backyard" breeders hoping to get in on a good thing. It also leads to fad buying which means puppy buyers who do not do their homework and are not prepared for the needs of a particular breed. It also leads to more unwanted or discarded dogs--puppies that could not be sold that a breeder is "stuck" with or the older dog no longer a puppy with issues that is no longer wanted. I personally would rather see the Bullie a well kept secret with its popularity falling to the bottom of the list. I believe that the rarer an object is that the more it is valued.

all kidding aside this is the

all kidding aside this is the unfortunate downside to the bully breed

and no breed should suffer that fate...i personally as well all members in here

love them beyond reason...and could not fathom that kind of atrocity b/c of said breed

being popularized for all the wrong reasons...

Sarah

I understand what you are saying, and I know you mean 'in a perfect world' where there are no puppy mills, no unhealthy, overbreed, mistreated, bulldogs.  Of course we are not in a perfect world, but us Bulldog owners have a bond with our bullies like none other.....not sure the world could handle many more of us Bulldog lovers--as quirky as we are  LOL

I agree with Sarah - however. .

I know Sarah is excited and loves her bullies and I agree, for my own selfish reasons,  that everyone in the world could experience the joy of being a bulldogger, and the Pride of saying 'We're Number 1 ! ! !"

However - for the obvious reasons that others are pointing out, there is more harm than good with being a  popular breed -

Remember a few years back, when Disney re-released  101 Dalmations? what did every child want ? and we all know the sadness that followed.

Don't curb that enthusiasm EVER Sarah ! ! ! ! ! :) :) :) :) :)

Sorry group didn't know I would cause a disturbance in the force

Didn't know my post would cause this disruption. :(  I would hope that everyone knows that I wouldn't want any puppy mills or anything like that.  Heck I donate to anti cruelty groups, rescues, and shelters.  I think no matter what AKC number a dog has there will always be non reputable breeders out there.  I wouldn't wish that upon anybody.   It's the job of the person buying the dog to do research on whom they are buying from and research the breed.  Just because you love a breed doesn't mean it is right for you.  The cost, your lifestyle, where you live all play a factor in what dog would be a good fit.  People are the ones that keep these places open, because they buy from them.  If you can't afford to purchse the dog than chances are you can't afford to keep up with the health maintenance.  I know the high costs for health issues on bulldogs.  Kilmore had health issues throughout his life and Winnie with her cancer.  I wouldn't wish that for anyone of any dog.   I didn't mean everyone in the world should get a bulldog just the BDW group should get more. :)

I knew what you meant

I knew what you meant.  I think if more people knew you would have to wipe the dog's butt everytime they pottied or take more time with their wrinkles than your own or mop up flood waters everytime they drank, the bulldog's popularity would go down. But the ones who do have a bulldog know that its all worth it. :-)

well said! ppl would looked

well said! ppl would looked at me funny when i walked my archie

and had his poop sac w/baby wipe inside...or in the summer when we'd be outside

w/tolerable weather and i'd try to calm him so i can try and get in those folds/wrinkles-

which is quite the chore b/c he never stayed long enough for a thorough clean

so  every 2 weeks i'd take him to his groomer-which by the grace of god they absolutely loved each other

and that man  was the only man archie actually sat patiently  and LET him under there!!! and yes those

who have that privilege know it is absolutely worth it and we all definitely go in knowingly what might be in store!

i agree and the same can be

i agree and the same can be said about not only dalmations but

pit bulls(w/the ever popular rap videos) and the "gangsta glamorization ",

before i even got my archie i can't even begin to tell you how many years

in the making that had been...all i  did was read up on it and ask questions...

after i got him...i think i bought 5-6 manuals and still it seemed wasn't enough

and still i try to learn as much as i can from everyone in here w/their own experiences

and really is  eye opening even at times scary of what MIGHT happen or could happen.
