I had a question, what's the age that someone usually can get a puppy from a breeder? We got Tucker at 9wks but we could have taken him at 8. I have an in-law who just got a dog. It's 6 wks and its having major separation anxiety issues.
Now, it's not a bully(it's a Bernese Mountain dog) but I know lots of you have dogs of other breeds besides bullies. Also, does the age vary depending on the breed?? Six wks sounds a little early to me but i'm no expert.
I know the age might not be the reason it's having issues and that almost all dogs go through this when they leave their littermates. The whole thing has just peaked my curiosity.

Minimum age is 8 weeks
in fact, many states have regulations on the age a pup can be sold, here it is 8 weeks.
Sounds like they bought this pup from a back yard breeder just looking to make a quick buck. Sad

my opinion....
Katie,
I breed shihtzus and I dont allow my babies to leave here until they are at least 8 weeks old.
If u think about it- vets dont feel comfortable with giving puppies vaccinations until they are 7 weeks old anyways... 6 weeks is super early.
I am no expert either- but i tend to get upset when i see people letting puppies go so early.
Leads me to question vaccinations and or if they guarantee health, if its been wormed, how long its been eating, etc.
I have a routine down with my puppies. I take them to vet for a health exam at 7 weeks and they have their first shots, gives me time to plan to seperate them from their momma that last week at my house before going to new home.
The person we got dutch from- her opinion with bulldogs- is that they arent mature enough to leave the nest until 12 weeks. I got dutch at 13 weeks. And she was a bit of an only child at her house lol
I dont know other bully owners locally, so I havent had a whole lot of interraction with them to determine when is good with bulldogs.
Not sure what anyone else thinks about what age is good....My personal opinion (especially with the shihtzus I breed) is that 8 weeks is minimum. If I have one that isnt gaining weight or as ready as the rest to leave I will hold it back another week or so also.
One thing I keep in mind is- I sell my pups for a fraction of what bulldogs sell for-so I dont make a 'fortune' selling them, we mostly do it for the experience and the thrill in enriching lives of our friends and family- but with that being said- I guarantee health for a year (till 1st bday) against anything genetic, and word of mouth travels fast! bad word of mouth travels even faster! I take great pride in knowing that I have a pretty great reputation. I get my feelings hurt easy anyways and I wouldnt be proud if I was letting puppies go too early and it leading to unhealthy pups. we thrive on the feedback of our buyers and the word of mouth that they spread.
Happily Married momma with 8 children total + a bully :) Couldnt get much better!!!
Life Truly is better when you share it with a Bullie :)
apparently...
.... he's the runt of the litter too. Now I feel even more sad for him :( Thanks for all the info.

hmmmm.......
They know the breeders and they were able to see the pups and where they were living before they purchased him. I thought it would be 8 wks min but wasn't positive. I can't see that being different here in Canada.
The tough thing for me is that they are going to raise it as an "outdoor dog". It's not staying outside all the time yet. They live up North so it's not uncommon up there. I totally have to bite my tongue as I don't agree with it. No matter the breed I could never have a dog living outside. He's such a cutie too :(

You have more control then I do
I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut. Makes me sich to my stomach thinking of the past, present and future of this pup.

I know!
If it wasn't family let alone my husband's family then that would be another issue. I'm sorry for going on about it but we usually stay there with Tucker and now that they have their own dog that's not allowed in, I don't think they'll want Tucker staying in the house next time. There was already a comment about putting his crate in the garage. I'm dreading having to deal with this.
Thanks for all the input.

Definitely at LEAST 8 weeks!
I would never take a pup before that age.
Amy and Sophia
normally it's 8...anything
normally it's 8...anything sooner is not sucha good idea...
Stella was 12 weeks when I got her
I thought that was just about right.
Mind you, we used to have puppies all the time with our labs when we were kids (lived in the country, dogs weren't spade, etc.) and we'd give them away at 6 weeks. They did fine.
8 wks minimum
I will not let a puppy go before 9 wks and my top pick puppies stayed until 10 wks and of the 2 I did not keep they went to their homes at 12 wks. I don't think 6 wks is even legal. Bad breeders :(
