Yikes Izzy is sick, blood in poop

As per my previous post I am trying to change Izzy to TOTW. I was mixing it as directed on the package. I wrote before that her stool was a little runny, well her first pooh yesterday was real runny. Little piles of pud. I went back and read all the threads on diarrhea and immediately took her off her food. I cooked and drained hamburger and mixed with white rice and figured it would do the trick. I fed her twice yesterday about a cup each time. She ate as normal, and did not throw up.

I also noticed she felt a little hot but her temp was 106.6 which according to what I have read is not high. So I gave her ice chips off and on all day to keep her hydrated. My daughter was here with her dog and everytime her dog walked by Izzy would snap at her and also my chihuahua. I chalked this up to gas or just plain feeling yucky. So I kept her comfortable with me and kept the others away to give her some time alone.

Today her pooh was still very soft and at about 2 this afternoon it had very red blood at the end. It was also on her butt hole bright red blood. I called the emergency vet clinic. They asked lots of questions and everything else is normal. They suggested I only give her a couple of tablespoons of the hamburger and rice for supper today which I did. She had a cup for breakfast. She just now poohed and thankfully no blood but still very soft. I am hoping this is a good sign. Keeping my fingers crossed. They did not suggest bringing her in unless she throws up or gets lethargic and high fever.

Oh, just discovered something else she is in heat. I was not sure if she had been spayed or not because she has a small incision on her belly around the same area as my friends dog so I just assumed. Her previous owner was not very forthcoming with information.

Poor little Izzy. Her Momma sure has a lot to learn and Momma is scared.

Take her temp right now

A temp of 106 is extremely high. Normal is about 101.

Let me know what her temp is now please.

Momma.to.IZZY's picture

Temp was 101.6, typo not 106

Her temp right now is 101.3

Whew! Ok that's good

You scared me for a minute there.

Her GI tract is probably irritated and that's where the blood is coming from. Some people suggest giving the stomach time to rest and witholding food for 24 hours. You can also use canned pumpkin (not pie filling) to help firm up the stool.

The hamburger and rice is fine and you can gradually add in some of the TOTW.

Also, I believe it's normal for them not to feel well when they are in season.

Didn't mean to scare you

Thank you for answering my note. I am just scared I am doing everything wrong. I want so much to make her life better. I think today I am feeling like I am failing her. I love her so much already.

I will try to keep the food to a minimum for another day or so. She is just so trusting in me. I want to do what is right. Her vet appt is not until Tues and I was wondering if I should try to find another vet tomorrow?

You're doing a good job

I don't see any need to rush her to the Vet as long as she is eating and drinking and her temp is normal.

Good luck - it sounds like

Good luck - it sounds like you are doing everything right.....not to mention a MILLION times better than her previous owners! Have faith in yourself - you're doing great :))))))

I'll wait until her appt

I will wait until tomorrow to take her to her scheduled appt. Maybe I am just over nervous about her. For a first time bulldog owner when you read all the info on bulldogs it seems like they need more tlc than most breeds. I sincerely appreciate all the kind words of encouragement with her care.

Hopefully when we see the vet I will know more. I have a list of questions to make sure I don't forget anything.

Would you believe this? Izzy is chasing the chihuahua this morning the way she did when she first came home. Yeah for Izzy.

One more thing.....

I don't know how much of the dog food you were feeding her but, you can't go by the guidelines on the bag. Since she looks a little thin, I would feed her 1 cup three times a day. If she starts getting too heavy, cut it back to 1 cup twice a day. You will be able to adjust the quantity as you go along depending on her weight.

Great idea

I was thinking Izzy could use a little fattening up. No one knows what she ate before she came here. Do you know a good weight for a female bulldog? Is there a guide to use? I can feel Izzy's ribs without much effort so I will try your suggestion once she starts back on regular food. I am going to mix the hamburger and rice with the TOTW (slowly again) and hope for better results this time.

Weight varies

I have three girls and they weigh 42, 54, and 58 lbs. My 58 lb. girl could stand to lose a few pounds though.

To me, the actual number is irrelevant with bulldogs. I go by the way they look and feel when you are touching their ribs. You should be able to feel their ribs pretty easily but not see them.

Momma.to.IZZY's picture

Can't see her ribs

I can feel her ribs but I think she could definately stand to gain a few pounds. Everytime I try to take a pic she will sit or lie down. This is the best I could do looking down at Izzy. Oh and Izzy had a nice pooh this am. At least it was more formed. No blood. I added a tablespoon of pumpkin yesterday when I fed her and it is working. Do you think today is too soon to mix a small amount of the TOTW with her hamburger and rice? I am anxious to see her feeding normally.

We had an ice storm last night and are expecting more today. I am just hoping I can make it to her vet appt.

I would probably wait another day

To add the dog food. Keep giving the pumpkin and tomorrow add a tiny bit of the dog food to the mix.

Stay safe and I would probably skip the Vet visit for now.

Momma.to.IZZY's picture

I agree

I fed her 3 times yesterday small amounts about 3/4 cup or so each time. I added the pumpkin once last night and again this morning as suggested. Do I give her a tablespoon of pumpkin each time?

I can't get my car doors open so I have cancelled my appt with the vet. Yuck, this weather is just horrible. They have rescheduled a new appt for her. I was looking at her records from the other vet and she has not been wormed. I don't know why I didn't notice that before. I'll make sure the new vet does not skip that. I did not see any worms in her pooh but I would rather be safe than sorry.

You are so sweet to discuss this with me. Thank you!

I would probably give the pumpkin

Only once, maybe twice a day.

Where do you live? I live in central Arkansas and so far we are only getting rain.

Momma.to.IZZY's picture

Indianapolis

I will wait until tonight to give her more pumpkin.

I wish I could say we will just get rain but they are forcasting some horrible weather. We have one storm last night that left a thick sheet of ice on everything. About half an inch. When I went to the grocery last night to get the pumpkin they were lined from the front of the checkouts right to the back of the store.

We also tried to buy a generator but everyone was sold out. Hopefully we won't lose our power.

They say today we can get as much as another inch or more of ice and snow.

I can't wait for spring.....

Yuck!

Stay safe! The snow is bad enough but the ice is awful.

Momma.to.IZZY's picture

We will

Ventured out for a minute this morning but will stay inside until this is over. The wind has picked up and it is so cold out there. I think I would rather have your rain if it was only warmer. Stay safe!

I found a great diarhea fixer from people on this forum...

it's called DiaBac, all natural and it works like a charm.  You have to order it online (I got it from EntirelyPets) but maybe for next time.  It's specifically recommended for loose stools during a food change.  It always clears my guys up in 12 hours.

Momma.to.IZZY's picture

I will do that

Sounds good to me. I will go online and order some today. Shipping should not take too long. Thank you!
