Yellow Vaginal Discharge Continues

About a month ago I noticed Cupcake had a white vaginal discharge.  I decided to wait a couple of weeks, see if it cleared up, and just keep the area clean.  Within 2 weeks she also started having a yellow vaginal discharge.  I had always heard that yellow = infection so right away I took her to the vet. They did a culture and determined that she had a yeast infection (causing the white discharge) that developed into a secondary bacterial infection (causing the yellow discharge.)  They gave her a week's worth of antibiotics and told me to buy and apply Monistat to treat the yeast infection.  I did as told, and the white discharge and yeast infection cleared up.  But 4 days after stopping the antibiotics, the yellow discharge was still there.  I took her back to the vet and he did a culture and found no organisms to signal any bacterial infection.  He could not explain the yellow discharge, but said that she had an inverted vagina which made it difficult to keep bacteria away.  (Confusing, as he saw no bacteria under microscope.)  He said we might have to do surgery to fold the skin back and make the vagina less inverted, but in the meantime I need to keep Gentizol ointment on her vagina for 2 weeks to see if it clears up.  Has anyone had this problem before?  Why yellow discharge, yet no presence of bacteria in vaginal culture?  She's eating, peeing, and playing normally, but I'm just concerned.  She's 8 months old and has been spayed so it shouldn't be pyometra.  Maybe vaginitis?

What a sweet baby!

Have you checked for a UTI or something to do with the urinary line in general?  The lack of bacteria does seem odd.  I have no idea what might be causing the discharge...but it's worth asking if that MIGHT be a contributor.  You can never be too carefull with these sweet babies.

Whatever is going on I do hope you find an answer for your sweet girl.  She looks like a total doll! :)

It sounds like vaginitis

My Vet explained vaginitis to me in this way when my puppy had it. He said that every puppy has bacteria in their body and their bodies have to learn to live with it. The vaginitis occurs during this time while the puppy and the bacteria figure out how to coincide. Most times it's nothing serious and doesn't require treatment but sometimes it's bad enough that it does need treatment.

Their is also another problem that can happen after a spay. It's called a stump abcess. This can occur when the "stump" isn't properly cared for during the spay. It's symptoms are similar to pyometra.

Agree with Vaginitis

and I would not consider surgery unless she constantly has an infection...and at this age she IMO is way to young.  Her body needs to mature.  The one and only time I have seen Pyometra, it was open pyo and the discharge was white thick and milky colored and it was the most horrible smell.  So I don't think it is pyo either.

Maybe some cranberry capsules for a couple of weeks as well.  Worth a try.

Inverted vulva...

One of my puppies had this.  It was recommended to wait until after first heat to see if it corrected itself before surgery, then if not, could be done at time of spay. It did self-correct.  Perhaps and hopefully Cupcake will have no future trouble with this, but, if she does need the surgery, it is somewhat minor with fast recovery.  I wonder that the vet didn't notice it at time of spay.   Good luck.

Thanks for your insight!

Thank you for your advice and insight.  I appreciate it!  I've been putting the Gentizol on her for a week now, and so far no vaginal discharge.  I'm supposed to continue this for another week.  Fingers crossed that the discharge doesn't come back after I stop using it.  It hasn't affected her eating, playing, or peeing habits, so hopefully she just has a mild case of vaginitis.  Now I'm thinking that this is puppy vaginitis, even though she's been spayed.  But it could have been present at the time of spay and that's why it didn't clear up.  Of course I'm no doctor... But the week of her spay (before we spayed her) she was licking the vulva area so that could've been puppy vaginitis.  Oh well, time will tell.  I agree that it's not a good idea to do any surgery till she stops growing.
