Worried about my Bulldogs gum covered tooth need advice.

I just recently noticed that my Bully was having a foul odor from her mouth which has never occured before. When I looked in her mouth I saw that one tooth is completely covered by her gum almost like an overgrowth over her tooth. I have a vet appointment scheduled for this Tuesday and after talking to the vet on the phone she seems to think it is gingival hyperplasia. The vet told me on the phone they typically just remove the gum covering surgically with a laser but that has me even more concerned since my Bully is 9 years old now and I cant imagine having to put her completely under anesthesia. Has anyone else had this occur in their Bully and what did you do?
