White Blood Cells and Bacteria in Urine???

Hola,

I have a question that im hoping someone may be able to help out with. A fellow bulldog own that is not a member of this website is having a strange issue with her bulldog and I told her I would post the symptoms here to see if anyone has had a similar issue. I had her email me the question and below is what she wrote to me...

My 7 year old Bulldog Rosie has white blood cells and bacteria in her urine.  She has a history of crystals and urinary tract infections.  She was on the special wet food for a few weeks to clear up her crystals as well as two rounds of Clavomax (two weeks and then three weeks) and then one round of Ampicillin (two weeks).  She has also moved over to the Royal Canin Dry Urinary Food.  She has to have a sterile urine sample and culture via needle next week.  What could be causing the bacteria and white blood cells in her urine sample and why didn’t the medicine clear it up?

Everytime ive had an issue with my bullie, this forum has provided the best advice, treatment and insight. Im not sure if anyone has had an issue similar to this but any advice would be appreciated. She is very nervous about the appointment and fears the worst.

Has anyone had any experience with this issue?

Aside from more medicine, do you think there is another treatment option? (raw food)

Any advice big or small would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

My Doberman had the same exact thing.

We couldn't get her cleared up. Every time I thought she was better she got another UTI. Literally 2 weeks after we were off the clavomox, every time. She had a raised white blood cell count and bacteria in her urine. I finally told my vet to get her on a long dose of amoxicillian. We went 21 days, three times a day, and she has never had another UTI. It has been a year and a half. We also put her on Proin, just to tighten her up. I have all of my dogs on cranberry pills with vitamin c in them daily. I have 3 female dogs, no UTI's.

I suggest you mention these to your friend.

Thank you for the response :)

I let her know what your response was and she greatly appreciates the info.

The appointment is this monday and she now has a few extra things she can ask about :)

Once again, thank you very much

You are welcome. And it's good to see you again....

I haven't seen you and Gramper on the board lately. Hope all is well. If you have been on, sorry I missed it!

Also...

A lot of vets won't try things if you don't ask them to! I had to TELL my vet to do the long dose for my Dobe. He agreed, but thought there HAD to be something else going on. Not true! It worked well, and like I said, Kora has been fine since.
