what human foods firm up poo?

I put this on the general forum by accident...

Dear all,

As you may have read before, my 14 yr old Gabby is on her last month(s, hopefully).  The dr. says she has an enlarged liver and mass on her splein, could be cancer, could be from the rimydal, could be from old age. Anyways, she was having massive diarehea this past weekend, but luckily the metronizadol seems to have fixed it.  I was so worried, I thought it might be "time" if the diarehea didnt get better. So now she is bland food, metronizadol, presidone, and now since she is feeling better, vet said to go ahead and put her back on her thyroid and to start her tramadol meds too.

Her poo has gone from a 3times a day solid, to a once a day creamy now... so sad how old she has gotten within just 2 weeks. I asked the Dr. if I should wait until her poo was normal again before I put her on her other meds, he said that her poo may never be normal again :( .

Anyways, Gabby is getting sick of the rice.. what else can I feed her to help firm up her poo? some people have suggested sweet potatoes, pumpkin mix, green veggies give her lots of gas.  I need to find something I can cook for her on a daily basis.

can I do like snacks of whole wheat bread or something with some fiber in it? She will not eat dry kibble anymore. is whole wheat pasta ok?

Also, has anyone tried any of these petalive natural products like detox, or livercleanse? waste of money or should I try it?

Just trying to keep my golden girl comfortable and hoping for a miracle.  She is still happy, coherent, loves the park, walking, and eating.

I wouldn't give her any new supplements

at this point, you are just trying to keep her comfortable and happy.

Does she like pasta? Maybe pasta cooked in low fat chicken broth or beef broth. Boiled hamburger with rice, turkey? It's so hard to find something, anything for them to eat that doesn't upset their stomachs. Have you tried canned pumpkin-not the pie mix?

The old guys and gals really have my heart, something in their eyes. Just love em.

Give your girl a kiss from me.

she is a beggar, and seems more interested in food if we are feeding it to her while we are eating our meals. i havent tried anything except for rice, carrots, chicken, steamed salmon. i am going grocery shopping today and looking to help get her something to keep her interested and full and hopefully good pooing...thank u so much, you are always a big help! gabby sends you an old lady dry tongue kiss. kibby sends you a slobbery bully kiss too!

got it...i think she is constipated now...

i think the metroniadol has made her constipated now... no poo at all today... the dr. told me before to give her half a pepcid with it when she was having superdiarehea, but i stopped the pepcid because to me, its seemed like it was giving her super watery diarehea... do u think i need to add the pepcid again? is that what is making her constipated?i kinda think its just the quantity of rice she has been eating.  will kaopectate help her constipation or help firm up poo? how much do u give? thanks.

pepcid

The pepcid was because the antibiotic is hard on the stomach.  It's a good idea to give probiotic or yogurt when they're on antibiotics (not at the same time).   I would try the food suggestions mentioned, and you can also try Fiber One cereal sprinkled in  with the food.  Good luck!

not at the same time?

so i have been giving gabby a few spoonfuls of yogurt about ten to fifteen mins before lunch and late night snack, i give the metranazol in with those meals because it has to be every 12 hrs... is this ok? or am "deactivating" the metronazadol? thanksn

no....

You're not deactgivating the Metro, but maybe not giving enough time for the yogurt to work.

When our boy was on chemo...

we gave him milk thistle for his liver.  Also, Slippery elm is good for the digestive tract,  These were both recommended by the oncologist.

kibby5's picture

in a pill? how much?

i have heard about milk thistle for the liver... are these things gentle on the tummy? do they firm poo or what do they do? thanks!

Be careful

The tramadol is going to slow down her bowel motility, so she may stop pooping because of that.

I gave my senior rescue fiber capsules (bought the generic kind) and probiotics to keep his poop firm.  But, he didn't have liver involvement.  The stool changes may be part of the disease process.

I also wouldn't do a liver cleanse.  That might be a bit rough on her at this point.

I'm a firm believer in letting them have tastes of what makes them happy.  Just keep it in moderation.

Good luck!  Hugs to Gabby!

how much of the fiber pill? and probiotic?

did you give these along with yogurt too? i dont want to overload her with hard poo! i would love to give gabby everything she wanted to eat but she has a history of eating too much human food , then having bile issues. believe me , we still spoile them rotten, but i want to get her tummy and poo under scontrol before i start letting her have all her favorites again. in the mean time, it will be her favorites, rinsed in water, oil squeezed and blotted out, skin peeled off, and in tiny quantities (u should see how i can make a chicken mcnugget healthy !)

I gave

One fiber capsule with each meal to my lab.  He weighed about 80 lbs and ate twice a day.

I use Total Biotics powder.  It comes with it's own teeny scooper.  I use 1 scoop/cup of food.

As for yogurt, I used to use this before I used the Total Biotics.  i made sure it was plain organic yogurt with live cultures.  I started with about a tablespoon (I think) per meal - I feed 2 cups twice a day - and adjusted it according to what the stool loooked like.

Studies show that probiotics have a beneficial effect on balancing the gut flora in the presence of liver disease, so I would try that (yogurt or someother type of probiotic) before fiber.

They are both gentle on the stomach...

dogs on chemo especially need the support of natural supplements.  The Milk thistle was 250 Mg capsules and the slippery elm is 450 mg.  I buy them at Trader Joes but any health food store would have them.  The slippery elm is also good for boosting the immune system as well as calming the stomach and bowels.

got it..

should i wait until i get thru this round of meds before i start this? she seems to have another weeks worthof all the pills the vet gave her, or beter to do it now? will it help with constipation or wait until afer she is back on normal pooing schedule? i am always so nervous to mix new drugs or add to a regiment because then you dont know what is making her sick if she gets sick from it, does that make sensen?t

No

It's not chemo.  The metronidazole was for the acute diarrhea.  The pred is for any inflammation (probably of the bowel) that can occur because of the heavy duty diarrhea.

Both meds are just to make her more comfy. :)

Digestion fix

One of the best things I have found for most K9 digestive issues is fiber.  Swing by your local grocier and pick up a can of Libby's Raw Pumpkin. Not spiced or flavored. Found in the baking area at my grocier. Plain raw pumpkin.  It is a wonderful treat for your pooch.  They act like a 2 year old kid with chocolate cake.  Firms up soft stool and softend hard stool.  Keeps my bully regular.  Good luck.
