Was at the vet on Saturday with my 14 month old bulldog, said she was a little heavy. Im wondering what is considered over weight. She is actually bigger then most bulldogs size wise and height wise but even since i have put her on natural food (first mate) she has been gaining weight steadly. I was told to take away all treats and have substutited treats for green beans. I have also cut her food intake from 3 cups a day to 2. Also have been going on 20 minute daily walks. Any other suggestions? I dont want to switch her food considering all the other problems have appeared to go away. Any suggestions on weight loss?
Sounds like you are on the road to a good weight.
All the things you are doing are what I woud have said to do:-) Decrease serving size (my girl gets slightly less than one cup 2 x a day). I give no treats daily, only on rare occaision do I give treats, and they are healthy ones like a carrot piece, green bean, etc. And I try to let my girl get as much exercise as I can before it gets too hot and she has to be indoors more often.
You should see a change in your bully within a month or so.

Less Intake, more calories burned = weight loss
Its the simpliest formula for weight loss, and people do not seem to get it :) :) so you are doing the RIGHT things :)
Gizmo is on 3/4 cup x 2 of ToTW Salmon - she gets a teaspoon of yogart (more for a treat than dietary reasons) - if we have a little meat left over for dinner, we'll cut it up really small and sprinkle a bit of it on her food for a change of taste for her (i'm talking no more than a tablespoon)
She has been maintaining 52 lbs for the last year, which is a good weight for her - (she really doesnt look 52 lbs, and she isnt heavy looking, some of those bullies we saw at that get together, a 77lb 11 MONTH old ! ! ! - but its human parents were probably about 300lbs each so I guess it 'runs in the family' Poor bully :( )
anyway, I think you are doing fine, I dont have luck with Gizmo and Carrots she crunches it, and then leaves them. Oh well :)

Do you think she looks overweight?
Although the bulldog standard has guidlines perfectly healthy bulldogs can vary greatly in their weight. It does seem that too often vets who are not as familar with the breed advise weight loss for bulldogs that are actually not overweight. I have seem 50 lb adult females that look overweight and 70 lb. ones that look fine. Depends more on height/build than simply a number on a scale.
As an example our Harley was a large puppy, gained pretty fast, and as an adult weighs 76 lbs which is big for a male bulldog however he is a bit taller, very fit, and does not look overweight at all. As a loose guidline our vet says that as long as you can visibly see and/or feel ribs they are typically not too heavy.
Personally, I do not think 3 cups per day is excessive for a active 14 month old bulldog and I would not restrict calorie intake unless I felt that they were overweight based on appearance or it was effecting their health.

wow - sounds exactly like my Gracie!
I was told she was overweight too but the day I picked her up from the breeder they said she would weigh 70 pounds. she was the biggest dog in the litter, even bigger than the males. I think it all depends on your dog - every bully is different. I also switched her food to grain free, went down to 2 cups a day, stopped giving her treats and give her green beans as a snack. she was 70 lbs and now weighs 67 lbs and I think she looks awesome. She is just a big bulldog. And I will never go back to my old dog food because she has done amazing with the grain free. Go with your instict - if you are happy with the way your bully looks then Im sure you are correct!
Thanks Everyone
For all your inspirational messages... she doesnt look overweight she is pretty tall compared to other bullies that we see but i felt like a horrible pet parent when the vet told me she was overweight. Right now she is at 66 pounds im going to try and bring her down to at least 60 if i can. Its hard in the winter and summer because i worry about excessive exercise in the extreme weather, but hopefully before the hot summer gets here i can have her shed a few pounds with all the advice given to me, thanks again everyone!
Vets always tell us our bullies are fluffy!
They don't know Bulldogs for the most part:-) I haven't met a vet yet that thinks Sophia is at a good weight, but I know she is.

Agree - Most vets say every bulldog is too fat
I had some xrays done on Kohl and the specialist that read the xrays had in his report that Kohl was obese. So I commented on it too my vet and he said every xray for a bulldog has obese on it. He also said my dogs are not obese, but of good weight and not to worry. The other vet in the office has always said my bulldogs were the healthiest they get in their office and their weight is perfect. Right now Kohl could lose a few lbs though. I took 4/5 lbs off MacKenzie because of his stiffness in his body and arthritis.
6 lbs is a lot to take off, you will likely notice a big difference in just 3 or 4 lbs. If you can easily feel her ribs, but don't visually see them then that is a good weight. Much healthier to keep them lighter then fatter. Also for those with dogs with tight tails, keeping them fat makes it all the worse, take a few lbs off and you will likely have a lot easier time cleaning under the tail.
i was always told too by my
i was always told too by my vet that my archie could stand to ,lose a few pounds...
i got him at 54 lbs and in 15 months he had gone up to 57 lbs...we walked
quite a bit he loved being outdoors...the truth is my parents did overdo it w/table
scraps...but from alot of ppl that had seen him and knew of ppl w/bulldogs i was
told that he was actually small comparing to some others!!!i agree food intake is just as
important as well as excercise and yes ideally you should be able to see and feel his ribs...
but if he's feeling good and is healthy then keep doing what you're doing!
smoochies the scrunchy face
thanks- lost 3 pounds
Its taken 2 weeks but she has lost 3 pounds, but that just doesnt seem like alot to me? i can definitely feel her ribs but it seems like for all the work and food we've cut out to only have lost 3 pounds seems like not alot. But the good thing is she isnt gaining weight...im really hoping its not a thyroid thing.
