Hi
I live in Bakersfield, CA and I inherited a 5 year old male bulldog. When I received him I was a little concerned with his heavy breathing. Also every now and then in the morning he will cough up a white thick mucus ball with dog food stuck in the mucus ball. I immediately took him to the vet and she had mentioned the heavy breathing could be caused by a couple of different things (small nostrils, elongated palate, swollen sackulos, etc) and that he could need surgery that may or may not help the loud breathing noises but would benefit the dog greatly.
She said I should take him to a veterinarian clinic that has a board certified veterinarian surgeon on staff to perform the inspection which also could perform the surgery if needed. According to my vet, we do not have a facility like that in Bakersfield. Can anyone recommend a vet that has experience with these issues and has experience operating on bulldogs?

Is there a vet list on this site?
or maybe on the bca site? please try to find someone who specializes in bulldogs-- they are different.
btw, i hope you listen to your gut on this one and it sounds you are concientious and careful. however, i can tell you i was a basketcase for a while because if this is your first bully it is really scary and wierd that they breathe so heavy. and the throw up thing is even relatively normal (though it should not happen too much). when james is excited combined with carsick (read: everytime we have a big outing) he barfs. i have been around the breed a bit, but i was still surprised just how labored their breathing is. so seeing a vet who is experienced with the breed is important as this may just be typical bully sounds and behavior.
good luck!

Dr. Butchko
is probably the most experienced Bulldog vet in California that I know of. He is in Riverside, I have no idea if that is anywhere near Bakersfield. Go to the Home page and there is a list of Bulldog experienced vets.
