Hello all.. I have 4 beautiful babies( Im sure we all say that..lol).. My Lexi turned 8 yrs in January and all three of her kids will turn 6 yrs. in July... They are all due to their yearly vaccines, including heartworm testing.. With the office call for all 4 and the vaccines, heartworm tests, one month of heartguard and one month of flea protection it ususally runs me about $420.00... My question is should I continue to vaccinate them at this age??? They do not go to dog parks, NEVER kennel/board them (I do not take vacations for that reason alone..) and no other dogs are around them.. My Vet insists a dog be vaccinated before she will see them for instance if they develop ear infection, maybe infected tail..etc....I live in Ohio so rabies vaccine every 3 yrs is mandatory,..
Please let me know wht advice you can give me, also, to those who DO NOT get the vaccines, please let me know the reasoning behind it.. thank you
I think I will stop doing vaccines at age 8...
Or older. We live near a vets office (not our regular vet) and they have a vaccine clinic once a month. Shots are $15. Maybe you could find one in your area.
Vaccines....
I allow rabies every 3 years as required by law. After puppy boosters at about 16 mos., they never get those again...ever. My vet asks me if I want them vaccinated if I happen to bring them in for something, and I say no thank you. He knows me and says he just has to ask. After 8, no more rabies either.
Heartworm...
I give this year round (on a different schedule though) so I don't let them get the blood test, and I get a written prescription from the vet for generic that I buy from KVVet--saves a good bit of money when you have more than a couple of dogs.
Vaccines & Hearwomr
My dogs stop getting all but Rabies after their 2 year boosters (when the RV turns to a 3 year), unless we have a horrible Bordetella break out in the area then I give the injectable vaccine as needed, but nothing else. Your Vet should work with you as a "team" in deciding the care of your dogs...of any breed. If they are "requiring" FULL vaccines or they won't be seen...I would be looking for a new Vet. As the Owner you have the right to say NO except for what is required legally. (Bordetella, Lepto, DAPP are NOT legally required!!)
As far as the HW tests, if your dogs are on prevention all year they DO NOT need an annual HW test. That is just your Vet trying to make money.
My dogs have been on HW preventative since babies...and have NEVER had a HW test. I usually get a years worth of meds and when it's time to refill I do it during the annual exam or a "sick" exam if it hits towards the end of the prescription.
My vet no longer
vaccinates annually. They are done every 3 years. With that said, I don't vaccinate after a certain age and in the past it has been around 7 yrs. I would definitely not vaccinate your oldest girl and the 6 yrs olds likely don't need vaccination either. You could have titers done to mkae sure, but I'm not sure the costs may be more then the vaccinations.
It is really such a personal decision.
Rabies is usually the law in mosts states, so as a precaution if anything ever happens you should have the rabies done every 3 years.
None of my dogs get vaccinations
except Rabies. After 8 years old, they no longer get a Rabies vaccination. All of my dogs came to me as adult dogs, all with a history of yearly vaccinations, I figure by that time, they no longer need the shots. Humans don't get yearly boosters, so I don't see any reason why dogs need them. My vet has changed his vaccination protocol to 3 to 7 years, depending on the vaccination.
Deciding to vaccinate or not is a decision you have to make, what you feel is best for your dogs. Don't let your vet bully you into anything, they should take your concerns seriously and do as you want.
I have a yearly heartworm/lyme test done and do give a monthly heartworm preventive for 6 months of the year.

first of all....
get your titers done...your vet cannot refuse to treat your your dogs if you have titers done....rabies is mandantory...i dont use vaccines...i am a raw feeder...i dont use flea or hw treatment....why because their posion....and shorten the lives of your pet..flea treatments may be a cause of seizures and cancers.....the holistic approach is a way of life not something you can do today then not the next...
i would each month my dogs are ready for rabies have the blood work drawn for your titers....keep your cost down...vaccines are 90% of your vets income and this is why they demand them.....not beause their needed
I do not
When the vet gave my boy all his boosters at once including rabies at 18 months his face swelled up like a baloon. I have never given him another since and he is now 12.5 years old.
