My 8mth old Aussie Bulldog, had a urethral prolapse one month ago, I found him hemorrhaging in the back yard :( We took him in for surgery and had it stiched back in, and we chose to get him desexed to stop him form getting so excited. But this week it happened again so we chose to have it removed. I was hoping someone else has delt with this problem and can give me som information on what they did, so I can stop this from happening to my boy again. Thanks

Some experience with prolapse
Hi. My boy winston had a similar problem when he was approx 8 mos old, but his owners at the time told the vet to put him down instead of paying to fix the problem. Fortunately she kept him & contacted BCARN, who took him in.
BCARN had their bulldog vet fix the prolapse & neutered him all in the same surgery. Since he wasn't in my care I don't know which option they performed (removal vs repair). When he came to me he still had stitches he had managed to pop a few loose during 'recovery' so his total recovery time was about 6 weeks vs 4. The first couple days with me & the first few after the stiches were removed he did drip/leak small amounts of blood. But once everything healed we haven't had any lasting problems.
At one point (after the stitches were removed) he got 'excited' & I rushed him to the emergency vet fearing he had hurt himself seriously. She very politely told me that he was fine & it was normal for him to get 'excited' for a few months post-neutering. I felt like a moron with a $200 vet bill...
Now he's completely fine & hasn'thad any other issues since everything has healed. Not to be too graphic but the tip is very bright red (all the time) & sort of looks like a 'button' for lack of a better description. But my vet says he's perfectly healthy & Winston doesn't seem to have any issues going potty.

Thank you so much for your reply, so good to hear they saved your beautiful boy :) Its terrible to think they we're going to put him down :( Im glad to hear your boy is now doing well and hasn't had any reocurrences.
Onslow started bleeding a little bit yesterday and I was hoping that he hadn't tore it open again, because it looked very similar to the way you have described, its good to know thats the way its meant to look.
He's heading in for his check up tomorrow, hopefully it all goes well.
Thanks again :)

you're welcome & please keep us posted!
I really hope his checkup goes well! Our vet told us that the dripping/leaking would happen for a few days and would be normal as long as it did not seem to be actively bleeding. He (and the emergency vet) both ran catheters to check to make sure the blood wasn't actually IN his urine (essentially a test to make sure the bleeding was just part of the healing process and not a symptom of a re-tear).
please keep me posted! Onslow sure is a cutie!! :)

Thanks so much for your help
Thanks so much for your help you've helped me put my mind at ease, we just got back from the vets, it's healing up ok, not quiet as good as it should be, Ons likes to lay on his belly so he's aggravated it a bit, but nothing serious, we've just got to try and keep him calm and stop him from getting excited, which is a massive task.
Once again thank you so much for your help :)

some experience
Years ago an 8 month old puppy of mine had an urethral prolapse and had the 'purse string' procedure done. He had several instances of bleeding during his recovery time so he was back to the Vet that did the surgery several times. Eventually he did heal completely and had no further bleeding. Unfortunately I lost him just after he turned a year old from wasp stings.
A few years later the pup's father had a bleeding occurrence, however his wasn't as severe and did not require surgery. The father had several re-occurrences, usually when the girls in the house were in heat. (I show my dogs, hence they are intact) I wouldn't neuter a dog only because of a prolapse, but with a pet dog that was going to be neutered anyway, then I would.
Thank you so much for your
Thank you so much for your reply, oh im so sorry that's terrible about your boy :(
Onslows case was pretty serious, he had lost a massive amount of blood the first time round, we had already decided to get him desexed, but I didnt want to get him done so early, but it was the right choice for Ons, he's always been very dominate and is always trying to mate other dogs people or even objects, so i guess if we didnt have it done he just would have kept injuring himself.
Was there anything you we're able to do about the bleeding? or did you just have to let it run it course?
Thanks again
