Thanks to everyone for their conceern about Bear. He is the latest:
Well, got back from the vet yesterday. I lied and told him I was feeding Bear kibble to see what the fecal result revealed that way he would not blame a raw diet. Well, the fecal exam was normal. I asked him what he thought of raw just to see what his professional opinion was. He went on and on about how a raw diet needs to be complete (organs, meat, bone). He said kibble has all the nutrients a dog needs and kibble is a balanced diet. He also stated that raw chicken contains salmonella and e-coli that could cause diarrhea. I told him I had heard alot of benefits from raw and he responded with are the benefits going to outweigh the risk of contamination. I just nodded my head and agreed (of course I know from feeding Bear raw how good it has been for him) I just did not want to cause a fus. After all, he is SUPPOSED to be the professional. Anyway, he could not find a cause for the diarrhea other than gastric upset from the suppossed kibble I am feeding him. He ended up giving Bear a Prednisone shot (which I did not like).
He also decided to check his prostate on his own (I had been noticing Bear has been peeing more than usual). He said it is enlarged about 1 inch and gave him an antibiotic (Simplefc?) He then tried to talk me into neutering Bear to prevent any further enlargements (he has never been used for stud).
My question is: I had been giving Bear (since starting raw about 5 months ago) apple cider vinegar with his meal. Could this have caused an enlarged prostate. I know it changes the PH. I used to take it myself and got a UTI so I am worried the vinegar might have caused him to be peeing alot.
As for the diarrhea, he has not pooped since the vet visit which is a good sign. I had given him a second Immodium before the vet visit, so I think that might have helped. He seems to be feeling better. I have been feeding him chicken necks for now.
I would stop ALL
supplements, extra stuff, etc for a little bit and give his tum a rest. Just food, if he tolerates chicken well, then just chicken. MAYBE some pumpkin, but not pumpkin AND diarrhea medicine. Sounds like the vet really doesn't have an answer why he is having diarrhea. The good thing is everything checked out OK, so hopefully now he'll get back to normal.
I do not have an answer about the apple cider vinegar and what it can cause. But still think you should stop it for a while, to see if it helps stop the diarrhea.
I HATE the standard raw=bacteria nonsense! If that were true, there would be thousands of VERY sick raw fed dogs!
