I have a friend who recently bred her female for this first time. She had an ultrasound earlier this week 26 days after surgical imsemination. Ultrasound showed one puppy. She has a few questions so I told her that I would post them and hopefully get assistance from those here with experience.
Is the ultrasound typically accurate in showing only one puppy when done at 26 days?
If her female does have just one are there any special things that need to be done either for momma or puppy?
Any assistance that I could pass on to her would be greatly appreciated.

Singleton
My experience with ultrasound was accurate in showing one puppy when we had singleton. However, I usually go a little later 28-30 days, but I don't know if that short time would make a difference. The only advice I have is whether or not a c-section is planned, to be aware that when carrying only a single puppy, it's possible the hormones that trigger labor may not. Some vets want to wait until there are signs of labor, and it's possible there may be none with a single puppy. Good luck!
Hi, I have had 2 litters in
Hi, I have had 2 litters in the past most recent Aug 2011 and both times we had ultrasounds done. The first time the Vet told us he saw 5 pups and we delivered 7 and the second time the Senior Vet told us it was a "big" litter and he saw at least 5 -6 pups and we delivered 10 !!! Also agreed a C-section is the only way to go. Good Luck and have your friend get her rest now because she will be very, very busy soon.
ultrasounds not very reliable... at least not mine
I would tell anyone do not do ultrasounds... stick with the xrays.. they can count spines more accurately than seeing anything in ultrasound.. My girl had one done, it showed three pups, vet said we would go with the possibility of 4 since one could be hidden behind another.. I took her to get the C-section when she went into labor (took her to a bulldog specialist where I live in Ohio for c section, not same one as did ultrasound), they asked me if I had a rough estimate of how many pups were expecting , told them yes, possible 4.. c section got underway, dr stopped said we need more Techs.. she has 4 pups and that is in the first horn, they didnt even get to the second horn where there were 3 more pups.. so had 7 all together!!!
Congratulations!!!!
So happy for you and new mama....hope all pups are doing great! Now the fun begins...no sleep and supervised feedings. Yes our ultrasounds were off as well, but that sounds unusual the vet needed more tech's? our first delivery we were actually in delivery room and with the vet, one tech and us we brought 7 puppies into this world (amazing to watch and actually help) the second time the rules had changed so only one tech and 10 puppies...I hope he didn't charge you more for more techs...Send pictures..Congrat's
