So, same eye, different day. James was rubbing his eye and low and behold we have ulcer #3 in the same eye. 2nd in a month. Cancelled weekend vacation plans we have had since April and my family is miserable. I am a wreck and afraid the entropian surgery has been outgrown. The only feedback I have this time around is that when his eye swells up, it looks like its rolling in. What makes the eye swell up is anyones guess.... However, when I have taken him to the vet they have said the eyes look good. Some of you may remember the surgery this time last year and how much it took from us...does it sound like we are heading back down that path? Or just some sort of allergy making him itch? Any suggestions? Please bulldog lovers, do not let me get a bulldog again...I just cannot take it....

Allergies can cause the lid to swell and roll in toward the eye
Are you taking him to an Opthamologist? If not, I suggest that you do. Also, has the Vet checked for Distichia? Just one or two lashes growing toward the eye can cause lots of problems.

Jacinda and DEb- and anyone else who wants to earn a small
fortune while living in paradise: we have ONE opthamologist on the island, in the whole state for that matter. Just to book an appmnt is 150, 80 of which goes to your medical bill, the other 70 goes to just being the only ophtamologist in the state. No biggie, we allready realized college was not an option for our daughter now that we have James but appointments are scheduled several months out...our Bulldog vet and our second opinion are going to have to do (why pay one vet when you can pay 2?)
THANK YOU for recommending the eye lash check. I get so panicky I forget logic stuff like that. What would I do without the rational people in the world? And without this blog?
I'm thinking that since this is recurring its the allergies, not the eye that are causing all the heart ache. Any ideas? We have temaril (2nd opinion said do not give with eye ulcer) and benedryl--- should we start a regular regiment? Is that safe?
Thanks again-- off to my National Board exam...your posts made my mind a lot calmer...

Opthamologist
I know Jacinda highly recommends a specialist and I often agree....BUT my only experience going to one was definitely not worth the $300 office visit to be told and prescribed meds, exactly what my regular vet would have done and he wanted to do surgery. It was for Ester, who got a little scratch (from Kohl's paw) and had a very small ulcer. I was right there when it happened, they were playing. Same eye ointment I already had been doctering her with from the regular vet and at 5 years and never having trouble with her eyes before I couldn't understand why I would jump into surgery...for what? She had a couple of lashes he saw that I couldn't see and he wanted to do surgery, I told him to pull them. Which he did. At some point in our conversation he actually said to me..." I don't want to argue with you". I don't even remember what I was asking. But he didn't like that I actually asked questions and questioned him.
I just continued with the ointment and the ulcer of course healed.. That was maybe a year ago.
I went to the clinic because my bff with Ester's 1/2 sista, highly recommended them. But I wasn't able to see her specialist because he was fully booked, so I saw a partner. Who IMO was rather arrogant, which I can't stand.
Wow! That's expensive
I think my Opthamologist's office visit was like $80 at the most. The distichia procedure was $400 and she needed the procedure twice. I did think he was not too patient with my questions about annestesia, not rude, but he sees a ton of Bulldogs. He did answer all my questions though.
looks like we will try the distichia when the ulcer heals....
not looking forward to the bill....sigh....
