Tyson update

Originally his appt w the bulldog specialist was scheduled for Saturday....I called this morning and rescheduled for 2:40 today.....the vet is about 2 hours away. I came home from work at noon to round him up and take him to the vet....had him kenneled ion the main floor (coolest part of house & yes the AC is on) and found him in respiratory distress.

He had just vomited a large white foamy/ watery barf and his tongue was blue. I quickly squirted some lemon juice down his throat and picked the 70 lb dog up and threw him in my car. I called my local vet and was told he was out until 2 and referred to another local vet that was on call and actually closer to me (although, I do not go to her because I don't feel she is very skilled). Desperate and scared I rushed to her office - she was at lunch!!!

Her Vet assistant helped me and I ended up directing her until the vet arrived....everything took forever. We got him on oxygen, they took his temp (at my directive because he felt really hot to me) - he was hotter than the thermometer could read >106! We iced his groin and arm pits and put a cool towel over him. She gave him a mild sedative and IV fluids.

Miraculously after 2 hrs his temp was down and they felt he was stable enough to transport. The rescue wanted me to take him to their local vet >2 hrs away since they have a 24 emergency center. We drove like crazy down there....he was doing pretty good, until we were 10 miles away, he got up.....walked in a circle...lied back down and rolled over to his side and stopped breathing.

I flew out of my seat and tried to give him CPR and I had him struggling to stay with me for a few minutes then he surrendered.

I'm so sad...we were soo close to getting him help. Shame on his previous owners for not disclosing his true health issues - when they called to surrender they told the rescue that he was healthy, just getting old.

I only had you for less than 48 hours Tyson, I'm sorry I wasn't ale to save you. I hope you know you were loved.

OMG I am so sorry to hear this!!

How sad...

it sounds like he did have palate problems, we almost lost our Chester that way a few months ago.  Like you, I was telling the ER vet what to do, they insisted on xrays and I just wanted them to give him a steroid to get the swelling down.  Poor baby, at least he had someone who cared at the end.

So very sad.

Poor boy. At least he knew he was loved at the end. Very, very loved.

Poor baby

Thanking God you were there at the end to love the little (70 pound!) guy.  The world needs more people like you.
