TRemoving eye discharge

Tuffy normally wakes up with some and I've been taking a cotton ball and gently removing it. But I notice some of the discharge is getting crusty and hard so is it okay to put some water on the cotton ball and gently clean it as long as I avoid the eye area? Or is there a better method?

A little warm water to loosen it up would work.
