Hi everyone! This is my first time posting, so I apologize in advance for the questions. I have a 5 month old OEBD that I have fallen so in love with, her name is Layla. When I first got her she was on Pedigree Puppy and doing fine, but I knew it wasnt a great food and wanted to give her something better...so I tried 4health from Tractor Supply. After the first few days she ended up throwing up a huge amount, so I stopped giving it to her for a bit and waited before I tried it again. I started her on it a few weeks ago mixed with the Pedigree and noticed she was itching more, her stool was looser, she had horrible gas (worse than normal) and one dirty ear, so once again I stopped and put her back on strictly Pedigree. I want to give her better, so Im off to buy a small bag of TOTW today in hopes it will do the trick. How long should I continue on a food that is causing changes in her before I know she cant do it. I also live in cold Upstate NY and heat with wood, so I need to keep her skin from drying out, and Im assuming that since our skin is dry from the heat that hers could be as well. I've read about Fish oil, but how much? Also, benadryl...how much of that can she have and are the ones in the caplets not a good idea? I have learned so much from this site and I appreciate your opinions. I feel like a first time mom, I knew what to do with my human babies, but this baby Im a little lost with. Im sure I have more questions, but these are the important ones for now! Thanks again :-)
Hello and Welcome to bdw =)
Congrats on your baby girl. Onslow is an OEBD as well.
If she did well on the Pedigree - honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. Its so hard to find one they do well on. If it was me I'd just leave her on that. To answer your question about how long I would say you'd have to give the new food about a month before you make a decision if it is working for her.
Fish Oil is an excellent supplement in my opinion they should ALL be on fish oil (unless they are allergic to it). I would have to check the bottle we have for dosage which is not at arms length right now but there are fish oils marketed just for dogs and also human supplements. I give Onslow the human grade - get it right from Walmart. He gets one pill a day mixed in with his food. As far as the benadryl you can give them 1 mg per lb of their body weight. The pills are 25 mgs so if she is near 50 lbs 2 pills should do it.
I'm sure someone else will know the fish oil dosage. Keep on asking questions, we are happy to try to help. =)
Fish oil
I currently give a 1400mg pill in the morning in there food. (human grade) They sell it in the liquid form also if they wont take the pill.
As far as the food, you should give it about a month to see any real changes. Try to find something with no corn, wheat, or soy and by-products. Any of the foods sold in the natural pet stores are the best. Good luck!!!
