Tail issues

Our English Bulldog, Harley is almost 6 years old.  He has been having some issues with his tail pocket over the past few months and we cannot seem to get it under control.  He constantly runs around the house barking and trying to scratch it.  We have taken him to the vet and he has gone through 2 rounds of medicine, but the infection just won't clear up.  It is very sensitive area and he won't allow us to "clean" it.  The vet's last suggestion was amputating his tail.  What are your thoughts on this???

Tail amputation may be the right thing for you....

If you can't get him to allow cleaning and the infection isn't clearing up it may be just as well to remove it. Get a second opinion though from a very qualified Bulldog vet if you can.

I went through this too

Mr. Higgins has a very tight tail and he was going nuts one Christmas in spite of everything possible including everything my vet could think of.. When he suggested amputation, I said no. He then referred us to a dermatologist. He prescribed a mixture of 1% hydrocortisone in burrows solution. It was not infected, just terribly red and raw. OMG this worked within 24 hours and he never had a problem since. My vet  does not carry this, I would have to go back to the specialist if I ever needed it again.  It has been 3 years and no problems now.

When I bath him, I get in there, clean it well and rinse with the jet of a hand held shower massage. He hates it, but oh well. I just tell him he is a bully and it is a way of life!

BTW, now when I clean his tail I  have him stand accross my legs, hold him tightly, and get in there with my fingers and a cloth. Clean and dry is what works and he doesn`t mind that much now that he knows it is not sore. I do not put anything in there, just put a cloth to get it dry, and I keep putting a dry section of the cloth until I see there is not more moisture. I keep the cloth in for a few seconds to soak up moisture, then go in again.

Sorry to go on. I feel for any bully in distress because of a sore tail. It is terrible seeing them suffer. Best of luck to you

tail amputation

My Jackson had his tail amputated in September.  It was absolutely the best thing I ever did for him.  He had recurrent tail infections and was in severe pain all the time.  Hated being touched in the back area.  Since then, he is a changed dog.  He is so much happier.  My only suggestion is that you take him to a reputable bulldog vet that knows what he is doing.
