Swollen inside my Bulldogs tail
Submitted by melinda75 on March 13, 2011 - 12:29pmHello! I just got back from surgery to find out that my dog has a very smelly, swollen red tail. I put medicine inside his tail and a dry gaze because its moist and brownish red in the inside. I made an appointment for tomorrow but I don't know what to do for the mean time. He keeps going in circles and sitting down and I feel soo sorry for him. I want to scratch his butt but I don't want to hurt him or make it any worse. Can someone give me some advice and let me know if they experienced this, and what I should do or put in his tail before we see the doctor tomorrow. Any advice is welcomed, Thank you!

I clean bumpers tail area with hibicleans that i buy at walgreens or walmart then i dry it well and add medicated gold bond powder it has been a big help. good luck

Yes, the bully is so distressed and uncomfortable. Long ago when Mr. Higgins had the same issue, the dermatologist prescribed 1% hydrocortisone in burrows solution and it worked almost right away. We have not had a tail issue since. My vet cannot prescribe it for some reason so I would have to go back to the specialist if I wanted more. I believe it is the steroid in it that reduces the terrible inflammation and helping the discomfort.
A good short term solution would be...
try to get a cotton square with peroide on it in as far as you can. Dry with another square and then use your finger to get some Desitin diaper rash cream in there. That will stop the burning, itching that he's having.
