switching food question
Submitted by wozrob11 on December 29, 2010 - 10:04pmim in the process of switching my 9 month old bulldogs food from purina proplan natural lamb and rice puppy to TOTW pacific stream . he had bad red tear stains and kind of a pink face and i wanted to get him off the puppy formula anyway . im doing a 1/8 a cup a day in each meal and im almost all switched over but today his tear stains looked worse i might just be loosing my mind but im just wondering what are some signs that the food is just not for him?i see the term "itchy" used alot could some one explain it to me. if its just itching alot or itching his face he is not doing either . i m sure it takes time for new food to work but i just dont want to force the food on him if its giving him problems . i also stopped giving him tap water and im giving him bottled water hopeing that will help also . thank you for any advice
It can take several weeks
Before you see any improvements. Of course, every dog is different and a food that works for one may not work for another. I have yet to find the "perfect" food. I am currently trying the TOTW lamb.
We have Newman on TOTW pacific stream and...
his tear stains are completely gone and they were awful when we got him. Our other boy, Ollie, has been on TOTW lamb, but now he's getting stains, so we're switching him back to the fish also. Fish is probably the least likely to cause problems, but you do need to give it 6 weeks to work before you think about switching again.
I almost gave up on Sophie having a clean face!!
I tried several varieties of food, her tear stains just stayed the same or looked worse at times. I finally gave up and stayed with the same food for about 3 bags...and her tear stains went completely away! It can take a month or more to get all the other stuff out of their system before the new food you are on can really kick in and work. Give it at least 8 weeks to see a difference.
