Swayed Back

We are fostering a bulldog right now who is a great dog!  We have the option of adopting him, however, we are worried about his back.  It looks like someone put a saddle on him and rode him...it is very swayed like a horse or a goat.  If you feel down his spine there is a bump at the end of the swayed part.  It does not seem to bother him, but we are worried about the future.  He is already 4 years old.  The vet said it was within normal range of a bulldog, but I don't know.  When we take him out, people comment "Is that sway in his back normal for bulldogs?" It is not as noticeable if he looks down, but when his head is up it's very noticeable.  He is such a good boy with my kids, my other bulldog, people, our cats everything....but I don't want to keep him knowing we might be looking at major problems in the future.  Our bulldog is younger and very active so that would not be fair if in 2 years he is in pain and having problems.

Anyone have advice or has heard of this with the breed?  I've searched the web and can't seem to find much.  Thanks in advance!

Can you post a picture?

Also, is the vet that looked at him a bulldog vet?

Hope you find the answers. He sounds like a precious little guy.

Bulldog Vet

I am trying to get a picture that actually shows it..sometimes depending on how he stands you don't notice it.  Will post one once I get it.  I took him to my vet who does seem my other bulldog, but not sure if he would be considered a "bulldog vet" Are there vets that are specific to just that breed?

Pictures of Swayed Back

His sway is more

pronounced than Kofi's, but I don't know if it would be considered extreme.

Hopefully, others with more knowledge of the breed will soon respond.

Back is fine

He is high in the rear which gives him the "swayed back" appearance. Actually he has a nice "roach" over the loin giving him the "wheel back" as described in the standard and a nice tail set. Toplines have gotten to be too level with high tail sets. When he lifts his head in an alert position it makes it look more pronounced. As you said when he carries his head lower--which is probably his natural position when he is on the move--it is less noticeable. His topline is fine.
