I need some help helping Hazel Nut cope with storms. It has gotten to the point that one night when she was in her crate while I was out she managed to wriggle out of the crate and jump in and out of the bath tub a few times.
The vet gave us an ACE prescription but as I've been looking through some forum archives I see that as whole it's not recommended for bulldogs. What can I do to help her during storms? When we do get rain it comes with severe thunderstorms.
Thanks
storms.....
It is frightening for some of them. I have one who gets upset, too. I found it helps to leave a radio and fan on to help mask the noise, and I give her rescue remedy, if a storm is expected. I have tried wiping her down with lavender fabric softener sheet, but this has to be done some time before the storm, and I'm not sure if it works--the theory is that the electricity causes their hair to stand on end and some of them are frightened by this sensation. Luckily she recovers quickly and she's not really that bad except for her barking. Good luck!
suggestion for storm anxiety!
Winston doesn't seem to miss a beat during thunderstorms, which is a miracle given that we live in Kansas and have had some pretty wicked weather so far this year. Anyway, I don't have any experience with these, but I have heard wonderful things about thundershirts (I actually mentioned them in the thread below as well). Here's the link: http://www.thundershirt.com/ From what I understand they help keep a dog calm during storms by applying consistent and even pressure all over...from what I've read and heard from friends who have used them, they definitely help!
I would defnitely avoid ACE. I've also heard horror stories about side effects. I think if you want something that might make her a bit drowsy during storms you could always consider benadryl (if the thundershirt doesn't help as much as she needs). For dosage on Benadryl my vet advises 1mg of medication for every pound of weight...so with Winston at essentially 49 pounds 2-25mg pills is plenty. :)
I hope the suggestions above give you and Hazel some relief from the storms! Keep us posted!!

Another option...
I have also heard that the stressless collars work pretty well. You can find them at carolinapetpantry.com. Thankfully mine don't seem to have problems with storms. My Sophie does have a bit of car anxiety and I am thinking on trying the collar with her.

Our girl Oreo used to be terrified of thunder...
we would put 12 drops of Rescue Remedy right on her tongue and it would calm her right down. Dont use the ACE, I don't know why vets prescribe it for our smushy faced guys.
Rescue Remedy
Do you do this a certain length of time before the storm hits? It looks like we won't be getting rain anytime soon, but I have ordered the Rescue Remedy.
I would do it as soon as I could hear the storm coming...
it works really fast if you put it right on the tongue. You can give it if you think a storm is coming, it's a natural product and can't hurt her at all.
Great! Thanks for the
Great! Thanks for the advice...if and when we get our next storm we'll give it a shot. Though they way Texas is right now it maybe months before we see rain again :(
