Stella's throwing up chicken!!!

Okay so I supplemented the Natures Variety with 1 1/2 chicken breasts (no bones) for Stella since she seams to need more than the box states. - But, about an hour after her meal she has started throwing up chicken. Not large chunks either. This chicken was frozen for about 2 months and has been defrosting for 2 days in the freezer. it didn't look or smell bad but it was a little frozen when I fed it to her (it wasn't hard but it had ice crystals on it...

What's the chance she got some sort of food poisoning from it? This is the second time I've fed her chicken and she didn't throw it up the first time. :(

zero chance

not sure why she would throw up....was she fed anything else? does not make any sense to just throw up the chicken...hmmmmm is she acting ok now...no vomiting or the runs..food posion is the same symptoms as in humans ....

She seems fine

She's not acting differently.. She does act like maybe she's gagging occasionally (acutally just twice.) - She's pregnant though so maybe she ate too much? Seems like a long time to wait before throwing it up (an hour?)

She had eaten the Natures Variety stuff about an hour before she got the chicken. I noticed she still seamed VERY hungry so I gave her the chicken.

Regurgitation

We have had issues with this, but not so much with feeding raw, but it has happened. Eating to fast, too much or not chewing, running around right after eating. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Once I gave Roxy some yogurt with her chicken and with in 2 min it came out with full force (of course it was in the house). No more yogurt for her!! Maybe it is too much food all at once. Do you feed 2x a day?? I started Roxy on a digestive enzyme recently. It has helped her tummy issues......

3x a day

I actually feed her 3x a day because she's pregnant so she's supposed to eat several small meals as opposed to large ones. I give her Natures Variety for breakfast... then I was giving her the ZiwiPeek for lunch (they loved that but I ran out) and then Natures variety for dinner (and when I had ZiwiPeek I gave her a snack at about 9 to hold her through the night).

Since I ran out of the ZiwiPeek yesterday I've been giving her Nature's Variety for breakfast, then chicken for lunch and then Nature's Variety for Dinner and if she's lucky I'll give her a bone at night. ;) lol

I did read in one of my raw feeding books

that if the meat doesn't smell really bad that it's okay to feed. Sorry that I can't find the reference, but since I am careful about who I take as an authority, I am not as careful about keeping Kofi's raw longer that I would for humans.

We may have chicken in a container for a week or so.

Have you tried giving Stella a chicken back for one meal? The bone to meat ratio is good. At first, I would break it up some with a cleaver, but now that she has gotten better at chewing, I just let her have one whole.

Also, read on the raw prey model site that chicken feet are rich in glucosomine(?) so she get's a few of those a week for a snack....YUM....(yuck). I've learned to love to hear and see her crunching.

Who'da thunk it?

Feeding whole

So, can I ask if kofi drags the pieces all over?? or does it stay in the bowel?? I can only imagine what my dogs would do if I gave them a whole piece of anything. Get it covered in sand, dirt, wood chips etc. etc.. Thats what happens when they get there weekly bone. I saw little chickie feet at the store and thought they would swallow it whole so I passed it up......Where do you get your chicken backs from??? So far I can't find a small butcher in my area. I just wait for grocery store sales and stock up. The lowest on chicken that I have found is .77 a lb. I have not gone to beef yet....

The first piece of raw that I gave Kofi

she quickly took from her bowl to the carpet and then to my new $$$$$$ leather furniture.

I have an old quilt that I put down now, and she knows that its time for a gourmet meal. She has never tried to take it off the quilt. If I try to feed her on the porch or even outside, she won't touch it.

The quilt works for me.

Sunday, I noticed my grandson was using Kofi's raw food quilt for a cover while watching the game. He was grossed out when I explained what it was for. Luckily, I wash it every other day or so.

Life is never dull in Bullyville!

Chicken backs.

If there is a chicken processing plant in your area.

I got them from a market that caters to those who cook alot of feet, turkey necks and backs. My butcher shop told me where to find them.

Just call around, because I never see them in the grocers in my area.

Of course, I am in a not so large Mississippi town, and our choices are limited!

I plan to visit the raw carnivore sites when I get back from a trip next month.

Judy posted the site, so you will find it a few pages back.

maybe give it to them in a crate at first?

I don't know from experience but when that YouTube video was posted the other day that dog drug that chicken leg all over it's crate. Since I have young kids in my home I'll probalby give Stella her first Chicken back and feet either in her crate or outside where I don't have to worry about the mess and at least if it's in her crate I can be sure to clean all of it up easily.

Chicken stuff

Oh yes, I plan to try all sorts of raw chicken products in the future... Right now I had the chicken in the freezer (which is supposed to be able to store for up to 6 months in a freezer) so I gave it to her because it's what I had on hand and I didn't feel like calling a sitter just so I could go grocery shopping, lol. But yes, I will try the chicken organs and backs and feet in due time. But for now I'll let her finish off my frozen batch first. - I can't wait for Thanksgiving.. I'm going to give her all of the organs! I know that sounds weird to be excited about it but they've always gone to waste in the past and I hate wasting food like that... If an animal has to die for me to eat I'd rather use all of it rather than just some.

Well, I was delighted the first

time Kofi went for the chicken livers raw!

A few months ago, I would have run gagging to the bathroom.

Anxious to hear how Stella progresses. When are her puppies due?
