squinty/infected eye

Happy Holidays everyone! Sorry I've been such a stranger... I've been having ongoing eye problems with one of Tuffy's eyes. Not sure if it's the eyelid causing problms or not. We've tried drops by vet but it keeps coming back. He basically squints one eye and there issome discharge and I noticed today it looks red and bloodshot. I've attached a photo. Any ideas of what this could be? We have an appointment with his bulldog vet tomorrow. Thanks in advance! Kim

Might he have scratched it?

Did the vet who gave you drops check for that?  If so, an ulcer can take forever to heal up properly.  Sometimes drops are enough but sometimes yo have to go in for debriding (i.e. they rescratch the eye with a little needle to stimulate healing - they don't have to be put under for this).  Stella has had ulcers many times and had to have debriding twice.  Worked first time for us in both cases but some pups have to do it more than once.

Other than an ulcer, maybe you're dealing with entropian.  Your bully vet will have experience with that.

And, by the way, nice to see you guys!!!

oh gosh celine this post brought back some memories...

and not good ones either!  this summer we had an ulcer and entropian simultaneously.  please check for that, its a simple dye test, and it can take a while to heal.  i have heard ulcers are very painful.

since the entropian surgery i have heard some different ways to apporach, like removing the lashes tghat are irritating the eye (vs stiches and surgery-- yuck)

all i know about eye injury is that the ointment works well (neopoly bac)

i hope its just conjunctivitis or something simple and easliy medicated.  good luck

Squinty Eye

He either has entropian, distichia, an infection, an ulcer or a combination of all.  It could also be allergies, causing his eyes to get puffy and then causing entropian.

The vet should stain to make sure there is no ulcer.  If it is not distchia then he likely has a mild case of entropian, since it keeps coming back.

My first thought is he has some stray eyelashes rubbing his eye (distichia).  They can be very difficult to see. You have to roll the lid outward and get them in just the right light, and I'm far sighted.  You can have the vet pull them, especially if there are just a few.  They will come back, so either you will have to watch and pull any that come back or you will want to have them lasered.

MacKenzie will get a stray eyelash or 2 a couple of times a year.  I have not had them lasered and he is 8. Never thought there was really a need since they occur so seldom.

do you pull the lashes instead?

Yes, I do pull the

lash if I see one.  Infact I just saw a tiny lash the other day on Kohl and have to get help to pull it.  I'm headed down to my sisters for Xmas and she can help me.  Between the getting old and loosing my excellent vision to trying to hold a head, an eye open and tweezering it really takes 2 people.

I've had one dog that I had to have lasered and she had lots of lashes so pulling wasn't an option with her.  But if it is only 1 or 2 ocassionally then I opt to pull them.

Thanks, Deb

Great things to consider. We didn't stain last week but when we were there in Oct they did the staining and it came back fine. But we are going back tomorrow and I'll ask for another stain. He checked the eyelashes and didn't see anything rubbing his eye. He put us on a regimen of NeoPolyDex drops (4x a day for 10 days) and we are going back tomorrow for a recheck. He wanted to see if it would clear up with the drops first before we pursue other options. It's been fine for the past two days but now today it's so squinty that he is barely opening the eye. I'm glad we are going back tomorrow. I'm thinking it's probably not just an infection if the drops aren't curing the issue. Maybe it is a scratch or an ulcer, or entropian.

I'll keep the group posted!
