Somehat OT / Tooth extraction on my sister's 12-year-old pug

My sister's pug was just diagnosed with a sinus infection.  At the same time, the vet said that he teeth were awful and that she actually had a couple of absesses.  The vet metioned this might even be partly to blame for the infection - but in any case would be quite painful.

'My sis is understandily worried about putting the old girl under.

I gave her my thoughs but she asks if I could consult my friends on the "bully board". (ha, she makes fun of me but...)

Any opinions are welcome.  As far as I know the old girl is otherwise healthy.

Celine, no advice or experience

Regarding senior dentistry but I wanted to wish your sister and her pug well.  I bet that poor old gal is in a lot of discomfort.

Hugs to Stella!

No advice either.

I will see if Lynn King can come answer this one, she just ahd a couple of her fur kids at the vet for dental work and they each had some extractions done. Maybe she will know more.

poor baby....I had an old mix doggie who was 11

went to have his teeth checked and had to have one pulled...he did fine but each dog would be different..his fur began to grow in better after that tooth came out....don't know if it was related to his fur being all messed up but it did grow and he lived to be 16~~~~
good luck
hugs

Thanks Deb

Of course, we all know there would be a risk.  But she's trying to determine whether it would really make a difference to her quality of life.  This pug is a real sparkplug, and I suspect this would breathe new life into her.

Not sure she has much of a choice

abcessed teeth are incredibly painful.  If it were me, I would have the teeth done.

Thanks Lynn

I tend to agree...

Just had a dental done on my 2 little dogs

one is 8 (+-), the other one is 12, they both did great. Both had one infected tooth removed. I didn't know, they ate fine, drank enough water etc., but it had to really hurt.

My 11 yr old chihuahua had 10 teeth extracted last year all ok

My 11 year old chi had 10 teeth extracted, a couple in the front bottom and top rows and 2 on each side in the back. He was healthy when he went under and came out just fine. The dr. gave him pain killers med and clindamycin liquid as an antibiotic. He had to eat liquid food porridge for a few days and then soaked food or can food. It completely healed in about 2 weeks.
