Riley had to have the surgery to fix her soft palate on Thursday. I got her home yesterday and she seemed fine. My instructions were to keep her "quiet" and not panting. Today she is obsessed with licking. Me, her paws, her legs, my legs ... anything! Has anyone experienced this and could it cause problems? Somehow it is making her feel better, but could it cause damage? I've got a call in to the surgeon, but not sure when I'll hear back.
Thanks for any help!
I would worry about it hurting her, as in....
That she is in pain and is licking for that reason. Otherwise, it may be that the area of surgery itches...like when we get a cut or slice and it itches while the scab is growing...sort of:-)
Not really sure, have no experience with this. Hope you get better answers than mine!

Little Strange
Are you feeding a soft food? Kibble soaked and mushy or canned food? Is she on any pain meds? You want to keep her quiet for a couple of weeks.
Did they need
to do any disolveable sutures? Usually a laser is used and if they don't hit any large veins they don't need to do sutures...but sometimes they may have to if they have a little bleeder.
Pain
I believe it is pain. My boy licks stuff and drools, causing licking as there is pooling of saliva in his mouth when in pain. He also has done the strange licking of walls, bedding, anything. He has had occasions when he has had surgical pain and required more pain killer. Rimadyl or fentanyl patch renewal after one wore off.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with the recovery. We have been through the palate resection as well.
