My family are new to the bulldaog breed. We feed dick van pattens limited ingredients bison and potato along with superfood w mushroom mycillium and avoderm powdered supplements. We have vet insurance and our vetsays he is the healthiest bully puppy she has ever seen. He is very happy and loving! I love the breed! He penile prolapsed which was fixed and he got fixed as well. My main question is about this: everytime he sleeps he poops. Alot! Nothing we do seems to stop it! When he poops outside he doesnt squat it just falls out although he doesnt poop inside unless he hasnt been brought out or asleep. The vet first said he had nerve damage now she says his anal gland are misformed, she isnt a bulldog type vet so she just guesses I think. I was wondering if anyOne has dealt with this problem bfore and can help us get this problem under control. Ive reseqrched and think fauna flaura or antibiotics for bacteria in his gut (metronidazole)? Please help! I have joined this sight afer seeing how great this community is! Thank you!
a possibility
What you describe sounds much like symptoms of SB or Spina Bifida. No control of bowels &/or bladder &/or poor rear gait are conditions that can be seen, depending on the severity. How badly a dog is affected is determined by where the problem is in the spine, i.e. the closer to the end of the spine, the less severe the symptoms are.Unfortunately because Bulldogs are an Achondroplastic breed, along with French Bulldogs, spine deformities are a problem, and one that is getting more common.
The big question though is, did the puppy previously have good bowel control and has suddenly lost control? Or has the lack of control been ongoing since he was tiny?
An X-ray of his spine will tell a lot, and a digital X-ray is preferred because it can be enlarged to get a closer look at any suspect area.
Although I surely hope I'm wrong about what is happening with your pup. If it is determined that is what your pup has, be sure to contact his breeder and tell them about the condition. They need to know what the mating produced so the breeding isn't repeated, and give you some compensation on the price of the pup.
Thank you
I was afraid of something major being wrong with him. I have contacted the breeder and am waiting for a response. He doest leak or anything like that he just poops in his sleep. It couldnt be anything else? Thank you for your response.
6 mos old.
Yes it has been since we got him although its gotten better since hes been fixed and wen we feed him earlier.
something else
It could be something else, but from what you discribe, it sounds like SB.
I do remember a few years ago a breeder friend had a male pup with a prolapsed anus. She had surgery(s) done on him trying to correct it, but nothing helped and she eventually had the pup put down.
There s a woman who sometimes posts here that has several SB Bulldogs and has many ideas on how to cope with the associated issues, there is also a yahoo forum for SB Bullies.
I have contacted the vet PLEASE READ
She xxxxxx has a guarantee that includes genetic defects. The funny thing is she wants us to send him to a vet that has lost his license Nortons Ark redmond that has the worst reveiws ever! Wat shud i do? Do I have legal recourse?!?
Highly Suspect SB
Not a good breeder. My vet is Dr. Brent Johnson, Everett, WA Northwest Animal Care Hospital. Take your puppy to Dr. Johnson for an evaluation.
Does this puppy have a dimple in its back/spine anywhere from the loin to its tail?
agree
it may be a mild case if he can hold urine. Perhaps you can control it by keeping him on a strict feeding schedule and waking him during the night to eliminate.
Also - I know this breeder
I have seen a couple of their dogs that they tried to show a few years ago and they couldn't walk, because of poor rear ends and hind legs. They could not even make it around the ring...it was very sad. This is why I suspect SB.
First take the dog to a reputable Vet
Get the pups condition, history, symptoms, etc. documented in writing. Go to the breeder with the info and if she requires you to see 'her' Vet, do so. I'm sure 'her' Vet won't find a problem (?) and she will try to blow you off. But you will have already seen a Vet and know what is up with your pup.
At that point you can put it to her to either refund what you paid for the pup and reimburse you for related expenses, OR, you can contact your State's Attourny General and report her and her Vet. A double whammy.
I would personally seek out a bulldog vet - there is a list on
the homepage and have them look over the pup. You will never trust what this other vet says if you do not feel they are reputable. If you see this vet and may need to due to the breeder request; I would not let them treat the pup until I had a bulldog vets opinion as well. I would do what I was comfortable with and what was in the pups best interest. Hopefully your breeder will work with you. I would also ask your breeder why she recommends a vet that does not have a good reputation. Good Luck
achondroplasic breed?
What is this? I only knew of achondroplasia dwarfism in humans. Brachycephalic I knew, but... Can someone educate me?
Thanks.
Deborah (Mr. Higgins too)
Very similar to the condition in humans,
where the trunk or torso and head are near normal but the limbs are shortened. And like humans with this condition who often have curved, twisted or weak spines, so does the Bulldog, seen in the curved or 'roached' topline.
If you think of the Bulldog as a medium sized breed, per the Bulldog Standard, it's body and limbs are shorter than other medium sized dogs, a Labrador for example. For comparison, other Achondroplastic breeds are; Pug, Boston Terrier, Skye Terrier, Pekinese, Corgi, Dachshund, Basset Hound, PBGV, etc.
The Bulldog's body has been shortened along with the limbs and if you think of the spine as a length of garden hose, what happens when you lay a length of hose on the ground and move the ends closer to each other? The hose will take on a bowed shape (like the Bulldog's curved topline), but if you keep moving the ends closer and closer together, the hose will become kinked or fold over on itself. When it is like this, water won't flow, or flow freely thru it. Same with the brain's messages to the rest of the body via the spine. Other spinal problems that are less severe, but still need to be addressed in a breeding program are Hemi-Vertebra, and unevenly spaced or crowded vertebra.
Sounds like very mild spina bifida or it could be nerve damage
If he has a dimple above his tail, it is probably SB. I know it sounds really bad, but it is not as major as you think. Try taking him for a walk before bedtime. The excercise will help clean out his bowels, and he will have less stool at night. If he sleeps in a cage, it is easier to clean. If his stools are not very firm, ask the vet for tylosin pills, they make the stool very firm making alot less mess.
He does have a dimple/ cowlick! Thank you all!
I would have just lived w this and dealt w it! Thank you so much all of you! I have been crying all nite. I love this dog. But we are not rich and cannot afford the problems involved in this. Plus it disgusting poor guy! I am going to get him checked bring him to her vet. Im positive hell say im high and that theres nothing wrong. I hope this happens! My father said in that case i could win a small claims settlement hands down since the vet is unlicensed and mine is. I intend to get her shut down and the vet by contacting AG bbb and neway I can. I just dont want neone else to flush 2 grand down the toilet! Maybe a neighbor would let me put a sign " if ur buying a bulldog TURN AROUND! You guys are great thank you so much yall. Ne other suggestions on how to deal with this? Im thinking i will keep him no matter what as he is my baby and who knows what they wud do to him!!!!!!! Dont let neone buy from SKYMEADOW FARMS FREELAND WHIDBEY ISLAND WA!
I hope you do keep him
and I don't imagine it would cost anything much to manage it - I doubt they are going to suggest surgery or anything like that. There are much worse cases where they have no control at all. Message Miranda, she has the most experience with this but I think with the right diet and bathroom schedule you may be able to manage this easily. I wouldn't say you threw your $ away, bulldogs are the sweetest animals on the planet - and yours is just that much more special. Just think of it as a learning experience.
Mild SB - Local Contact
I sent you a reply to your private message. Don't send him back to the breeder, they will put him to sleep.
For a local contact with SB experience I would talk to Jewlz w/Loving Care Spa in Carnation (google search). She does a lot of Frenchie and Bulldog rescue and takes on the special need cases. She is a sweetheart and will help all she can and should be able to provide you with some ideas on how best to handle his needs. If you decide you want to rehome him she might be able to help you. She is also the go-to-gal for daycare and overnight boarding if you ever need such.
I have been trying to find out if Dr. Keith Nortons wife Melissa is actually a licensed vet. His license is suspended but I'm guessing they operate under her license, but now I'm curious to see if she is actually licensed and I can't find it anywhere online. I'll give my vets office a call in the am if I can't find the answer.
If you have the Norton's evaluate the dog they need to take spine xrays. Once you pay for them they are yours and you should take them with you and have them evaluated by another vet.
I agree with Miranda. Sounds like SB tome as well.
I had an SB girl and it is easy enough to manage. Especially if it is only stool and not urine. Keep him on a tight feeding schedule and walk him 30 minutes and an hour after feeding, morning and night, with a few walks in between. He will evacuate all the stool and should be able to make it through the night. If you feed him later in the evening, then shift your feeding schedule to an earlier morning/earlier evening schedule, with about 12 hours in between feeding.
Do NOT let a vet tell you it is a horrible condition and talk you into putting this pup down for any reason. They will try, believe me. But even if you can't keeo him yourself, there are others who will take him and can deal with the issue. Just keep that in mind.

She wont respond now neither will her "vet"
All those who have given advice or know of this breeder please post a review on google as we have done so no one makes the same mistake we did. I shud have listened to my gut! Im planning on calling an experienced ebd vet as our vet is very uknowledgable about the breed. I will contact the different contacts yall have given me plus some more. I wud never give kashabash back to her Ever! I contacted consumer advocate Jesse from King 5 and they may be interested in doing a story! Ill keep u posted, also any and all advice in the meantime is greatly appreciated! Thank you everyone!
Vet Xrays confirm mild SB in Kash
Thats it. Im devastated.
Very Sorry
I'm curious if you had a well puppy exam done by your vet when you purchased him? How old was he when you picked him up? A dimple is a good indication of possible SB, did your vet happen to comment on it when his puppy exam was done? Did you ever mention his lack of bowel control to your vet?
Ok, now at least you know what you are dealing with.
Don't get down on this. If keeping this pup is something you feel strongly about, there is a lot of information available from those of us who have or have had SB Bullies. It is manageable, just different. He is still the same sweet pup you had before the diagnosis, you just have to adjust your thinking on this a bit. Now, if you think you can't handle having him or it becomes too much for you, there are plenty of us here who can help you with re-homing the little fellow.
Right now just concentrate on learning all you can about SB and the long term effects and expectations. It isn't the end of the world, it is just an adjustment from a normal healthy puppy to a normal SB puppy:-)
