Skin,skin,skin....advice please

I have two females and they have been suffering from IDC for months now.  We have tried so many things and they will NOT dry up and go away. The epsom salt did help the redness but they didn't get any smaller.  I tried the clorox but just a few time..how long do I need to do these remedies to see a difference.  These poor girls have gotten to where their cysts in the pads on the bottom of the feet and so swollen that when we take them on their daily walks they are walking on an unpadded part of the foot and end up with sores.

We have changed their diet to the perscription food from the vet Z/D. Their coats look nice and thick, but their feet are still terrible.

One more problem to ask advice for... Butters has these sores all over her, they are mostly on her belly but she is now starting to get them on her legs, neck and rear, they are itchy and flaky...all she does all day is lick at the air so I know between the feet and these itchy sores she is not a happy camper.

Any advice, help...anyone been through this and have an ideas?

Have you tried Preperation H

Have you tried Preperation H yet? There are several remedies that different bulldog owners have used that have been successfull for them. I've even had success with Vinegar Masengil Douche. The red areas look like staph infection to me. You will need cephelexin for skin issues.  500mg twice a day.  My vet gave me a script for 60 plus a refill so if I need it in the future. I got it filled at walmart for 8.00.  It's 4.00 for a 30day supply. Hope this helps.

allergy?

we, too, suffer through the odd IDC and Matilda used to get those types of marks on her stomach.

her diet change has greatly improved the severity, but i would not rule out a couple of things:

1) do you use any type of commercial cleaner that could be an irritant? i started cleaning the hard surfaces only with a steam mop and white vinegar; also switched detergents for anything that she would lay down on; her bedding, etc...to see if it was a contact allergy. i found that a friend was using febreze - when we visited and sit on the rugs and furniture she'd turn bright red.

2) do they spend much time outside? we have a grass allergy. i noticed when it is hot, humid and damp the paws and redness get much worse if she spends time lounging around on the grass. sometimes she stays on her mat in the yard, sometimes not. if her paws are dry and no open sores (only!), I rub Snout Soother on the contact surfaces. It helps keep everything soft and acts as a bit of a contact barrier between her feet and whatever...

occasionally I will sit her in a bath of just a few inches of of cool water with apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and epsom in it. only enough to contact her feet and belly. you don't need to rinse, just pat dry.

IDC/skin issues

The epsom salt soaks are soothing for the foot IDC's, but might not cure them.  There are many remedies, but not everything works for every Bulldog.  I've tried them all, I think.  Right now we are seeing some relief on a persistent IDC (has not gone away for 2-1/2 yrs.) using the cephelexin and ketoconazole antibiotics together.  We have tried every home remedy, 5 antibiotics, 3 surgical procedures, several topicals:  fluocinonide, animax, mupirocin, preparation H, some new ointment I found on line in addition to colloidal silver and cell salts.  Tried several different protein sources and even raw diet for 4 months.  Nothing seemed to work.  I continue the epsom salt foot soaks daily.  Good luck and please keep us posted on your results.

Micki...are you on the antibiotic regimen longterm?

I have my bullie on the second dose of Cephelexin because it's the only thing that helps with my dog's acne. Every time we go off it the acne comes back. The vet wants him on it for at least another three weeks to try to kick this. Just wondering if you are on these antibiotics longterm and if the vet thinks it's safe....

Ceph....

It is my understanding that Cephalexin antibiotic is one of the medications that are safe for long term use.  Keeping your boy on it for the time the vet wants is not excessive and hopefully will clear up that skin issue.   The correct dosage and time is often longer than usual antibiotic therapy, so don't be concerned about that.

The Ketoconazole we're using now in conjunction with the Cephalexin was just started last month, but I believe it should not be used long term.  I requested another 30-day prescription because it's helping better than anything we've used, and I can't get down there to the Bulldog vet for a while.    The vet may suggest, but if he doesn't I'll ask about having blood work done to make sure his liver isn't being adversely affected.   Unfortunately, we've been through a lot of treatments that start out seeming to work, but the effects haven't lasted.  Hope this is it!

Good luck to us in getting these cleared up!

Thanks, Micki...the improvement in Tuffy's skin is amaxing

On this antibiotic. For the first time in weeks his muzzle isn't red and the hair is starting to grow back on his chin. All the home remedies haven't helped... Hope your regimen gives good results too!

Poor babies....

I hope they get some relief. Have you considered seeing a dog dermatologist to get to the bottom of what's going on?

oh no! poor bullies...vet about 30 mins away!

with kibby's idc's , i find that just keeping them clean and dry makes them heal faster... i usually wash with an antiseptic wash, then warm towel, then spray neosporin...clean just with water daily, but make sure its dry after!

i use dr. hackler at groveway vet in castro valley, i know it may be a little far, depending where you are in San Jose, but he is totally well worth it! He is a bully specialist and helps with norcal bulldog rescues on a regular basis. he will always know whether its serious or not, and won't charge or recommend every test under the sun to get the job done!
