Skin/Food Allergies?? Help!

Hello!

My bully is 8 years old and for the last year or so he's had pink/red "armpits" under his front legs. Recently it's spread to his belly, and back legs. The back legs have some darker pigment on their inner aspects as well. In the past he's had numerous ear infections and the vet thought he might have a food allergy so I've been feeding him Wellness brand food but his belly redness is getting worse. In the evenings he will lick constantly at nothing and sometimes lick his front or back paws. It's weird that he only does the licking in the evenings, otherwise he's fine during the day. Anyone have any suggestions or help? I just bought Dreft to wash his bedding in and some Gold Bond powder to put on his belly. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Which wellness are you feeding?

I have my guys on grain free which really helps with allergies.  I have two of them on the Taste of the Wild lamb formula, but my other one was a little itchy on the lamb so we've switched him to TOTW Pacific stream which is salmon and he's doing great on it, no more itchies and his tear stains are disappearing.  Fish is probably the one food that can cause the least allergies.  Keep using the gold bond powder, you could also give benedryl (a 25 mg pill for each 25 pounds, so if he's 50 pound of over he can have two), that might help also.

Hi Kathy, I think I'm feeding

Hi Kathy, I think I'm feeding him the fish & sweet potato variety (I forget because I always throw the bag away!) I'm going to try switching him to the Taste of the Wild and see how he does. Thanks so much for your help!

here are some more suggestions

We've been battling allergies both food and environmental for 8 years with Rex. I think the best thing to do is to keep your bully's food including any treats, people food and dog, to a  minimum so you can gauge what he may be reacting to. IT is easier to keep track if you write down what you give him and his reactions. We give rex just the one TOW dog food and when he gets a treat, it is 6 or 7 pieces of  the same dog food. he gets his prednisone with a small piece of cheese and a salmon supplement AND THAT"S IT.  We had started gving him store bought treats and he just broke out and itched so bad.  Oatmeal dog shampoo helps his itchy skin, and we bathe him 2 times a week. Oatmeal shampoos are sold at petco, walmart, any farm supply place. Also, when i wash his blankets and bedding i use a very small amount of white vinegar in hot water, or a very small amount of bleach and hot water. The detergents just make him itch all over.

We switched to the TOW 2 months ago and he has been a lot better to the point that he does not need any antihistamines anymore. He use to take 3 hydroxizine (prescription) a day. Benadryl works but it makes my little guy so sleepy during the day and i hate that. The hydroxizine didnt make him as sleepy. He has been on prednisone his whole life and it seems that 5mg a day work for him. If he stays this well, we are planning to cut back on the steriod and see if he is OK. If you go to the vet you can get medicated shampoos that work well like dermachlor k shampoo and wipes for their feet.

I know a lot of folks here on the forum have had sucess feeding a raw diet and you can search this forum to see how they have done. Raw is my next step if the TOW food goes south on us :-)

Unfortunately it is trial and error with them, what works for some doesnt work for others. This forum has saved us so many times! It is a great place to get advice and see what has worked for others. best of luck, hugs to your bully :-D

Thanks so much for the

Thanks so much for the suggestions and what you do with your bully! I just started Winston on TOW today so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! He went to the vet yesterday and yes,  it is allergies. Got a shot & some meds. If TOW doesn't work I may look into raw. He doesn't get any treats but I think I'll start doing what you do and giving him that same food as treats, he'd like that :)  Thanks again, it helps to see what others do for their bullies!
