Hello - My 4 month old Bully has a skin conditon that was a small pink spec on his belly the day i picked him up from the Breeder. This small red spec spread to blisters all over his belly. The first vet i took him to said to try Neosporin but that did not do a thing...as it progressed i went to another very reputable vet and she put him on Amoxicillan and that did no good either. She then started him on Cephalexin and prednisone and did a culture. The rash was quieted down greatly by the prednisone and in the meantime the culture has come back and it says that it is resistant to most antibiotics...the only one that will work is Baytril. The VET says that is the only way to get better but she has cautioned me that it may cause joint issues although NONE of her patients have ever had this problem. When i read about Baytril on the net it sounds very scary and the consensus is to NOT give it to a growing puppy who is in the rapid growth stage.Does anyone have any experience with this. When the rash is bad my pup is miserable and stops to scratch himself every 5 steps. He was just getting better with the prednisone but that was a temporary fix.......my first pup.....any help would be greatly appreciated.
No experience with the rash
did your vet offer any other ideas like benadryl or claritin to help with the ongoing symptoms? Do you know if it's an allergy related rash or something independent of that? I've heard that oatmeal baths (similar to what you give little kids when they get chicken pox) will help sooth irritated skin.
I'm sorry you and your pup are suffering. There are a few others on the board who have experience with skin issues that might be able to provide some better insight. If you have pictures you could post that might help the others who do have some experience dealing with this.

skin issues
Sorry you're having trouble with your baby, I know how hard it is to see them itching and in pain like that. The only thing that's worked for our pup (2.5 yrs old) is Cyclosporine... he had pimple-like bumps that would get crusty and his hair would fall out around these spots on his back... and he itches SO BAD! We tried antibiotics, antihistimines, etc... but so far, the Cyclosporine and bathing him 2 times a week with a Mal-A-Ket shampoo has worked for us. I will tell you though, Cyclosporine is really exspensive and I'm not sure if it is recommended for puppies... you'll definitely want to talk to your vet about it... keep us posted!

Have you tried diaper ointment?
Beginning of spring Rocco had little bumps underneath and also my jack russell. I put the diaper stuff on by morning both dogs were clear. Then I put Rocco on allergy meds 10 mg. and no problems. That's scary if the meds are "warning you" re: age.
Are you sure it was the Pred and not the Cephlexin that helped?
You said he was on both at the same time how do you know it was the pred that helped? We had a bacterial skin infection the last 2 years in a row. My old vet kept putting him on steroids which never REALLY fixed the issue. I got a new vet and she put him on a months worth of cephlexin and it cleared him right up. He looks gorgeous again. Cephlexin is a pretty mild medication. Just a thought and info about our experience.
yes pretty sure because the
yes pretty sure because the culture has come back and said that the bacteria is immune to the cephalexin...
thats a tuffy.
There are a few *experienced* breeders that post here. Like Deb and McKenzie, I would wait and see what they think, they would be the most knowledgeable I think. Good luck!
our other dog had a rash...
...we switched to medicated shampoo and better grade food. he also gave him something (pills) for the itchiness (dont know the name) so he would stop messing with it. HOWEVER, he is 7, so not sure what puppy can take. Did they rule out ringworm?
