Rex has this awful thing on his toe. He has had it since October when he first started having really bad bacterial skin infections. We’ve been going to the vet since Oct with him and since then he has been on various antibiotics. I watched as this thing went from a little bump to what it is now on his toe. Along the course of the last 3 months, it took a while, different vets and finally a dermatologist to diagnose Rex with calcinosis cutis and cutaneous lupus based on skin biopsies. Since Oct he has been on cephalexin, baytril, doxycycline, clindamycin. I’ve been pointing this thing out all along and all the vets kept saying the antibiotics will clear it up. They did not. They really weren’t concerned about it because of his other issues. When the diagnosis came in mid-December the dermo placed him on atopica and the doxyccline and clindamycin. His overall issues with his skin is so much better, no more bacterial infections, his hair is growing back and he is himself except for this toe thing.
Last Monday night we noticed a lump on what would be Rex’s wrist on the same foot with this growth. We rushed him to the vet on Tuesday, she did a needle aspiration could not a very large sample, but said the few cells that she got, were normal. She gave us a topical dexamethisone and baytril solution for his toe. Which did nothing. On Friday we went to the dermo again and he took a scraping, he thinks it is a fungus, we have to wait a week for the culture to grow but since Friday he told us to put lamisil on his toe,,, it is now Monday and nothing has changed. I am at my wits end with this thing. The dermo also suggested the worst case scenario; the lump on Rex’s wrist could be cancer. He checked his lymph nodes on his arm and chest and they were normal.
Has anyone seen anything like this? Any help is appreciated.

Our bulldog just had the same
Our bulldog just had the same thing. We posted the same kind of picture a few weeks ago that was just like yours. What they said to do and what we did was everyday soak his paws in epsom salts in warm water for about 5-10 min. And if there is any open wounds on it put some polysporin on it after. He might have to have a cone on as my dog would lick it up if we did not have it on.
It took about 2 weeks of doing that everyday for it to go away =] Hope that helps
Here is the link to the post we put up for the same problem and you can read some more =] http://www.bulldogsworld.com/f/bulldog-medical-health/thing-paw
epsom salt soaks didnt work :-(
I tried soaking a few weeks ago with the epsum salts and Rex kept pulling his foot out like it was hurting him. I think the 'salt' in the wound stung him. Anyway I then tried prep H, again, no luck. I also failed to mention that he has been getting a bath every 2 days or so for his skin condition and I've used an anti fungal/anti bacterial shampoo to soak his foot in. I've posted this picture and the same question on www.liveperson.com. If I get any suggestions from that website, I will try it (with vets blessings) and post the results here, so others can share. It does not seem to bother him at all as far as pain. He lets me touch it and rub the lamisil on it and put a sock on his foot without so much as a glance at what I am doing. He usually fusses when i try to do something helpful for him like wipe his wrinkles or his ears, so whatever it is, it is causing minimal pain....i think.....i hope. Thanks all.

Yea our bulldog kept pulling
Yea our bulldog kept pulling his foot out to. But we just had to hold it there. It is not like regular salt that will sting, try tasting it, it will have not taste at all. Like I said with our bulldog it took almost 3 weeks of doing the epson salt everyday for it to go away. You have to be patient with these there's no quick solution =[ Once they get that big like ours did
But it sucks at the same time because you dont like seeing that on your dogs paw so you want it off asap.
No experience with this...
but I'm definitely sending good thoughts and prayers to your guy. Please let us know what you learn from your vet!! I hope it's something that can be easily (and permanently) treated once you get it figured out!

My swimming bully buddy!
Thanks for your well wishes :-)

Skin issue on toe...
Atopica is very hard on the immune system and has possible serious side effects, so I'd read up on that. When it was suggested for my boy's chronic idc, I refused it. As for the toe that your vet thinks may be caused by fungus, ask your vet about giving cephalexin along with ketoconazle. I also recommend gently massaging on a cream called Fluocinonide .5% which requires a prescription.. Except for the location, this looks a lot like some idc's I've seen. They can vary in size, shape and texture. Good luck.
did u try?
did u try a hemroid cream?... our vet told us to try the salt. but that didnt work. and we use one of the cream, and wrap it while he was sleepin.. it drew it outward so it got a little gross for a like a day or 2, but then cleared up right away... i think we have a picture... hold on ill check!.

here are the pics
his toe was a lot grosser then the pic showed, it would puss and bleed, He did give us an antibiotic too, but he told us to put the cream on at night, so he wouldnt lick it while he slept...it cleared up in about a week or 2, i forget.

how long before you started to see results?
I will try the epsum salt again, but now I've been putting lamisil on for 5 days (per the vet) and i dont see any change at all. by friday we are suppose to get the results of the culture test. It is so frustrating, you are absolutely right, I would like to see at least there is some physical change to the thing, but there isnt. Did you start to see any change at all after a few days or after 3 weeks it got smaller? Thanks so much!

Yes after doing his foot
Yes after doing his foot every day for a week it started to look better and got smaller. He still has it but its very very small. This has been very hard to get rid of for sure =[
