Our bully boy, Milo has been around the forums since we got him in 2003; we haven't been online much in several years but this time, we need help! We just got back from vacation this past weekend and picked up Milo from the vet, who had been there for 10 days. He's been kenneled several times before, but this was the first time he'd been boarded alone. He seemed sluggish and not himself the first three days, but this past Wednesday night, he woke up wailing, the most horrific cry like he was in pain. He sleeps with us so my husband tried to soothe him; we turned on the lights and tried to make sure he was awake. He seemed hesitant to lay back down but did and then two hours later, had another episode. All in all, he had four that night and we had back back to the vet the next day. Our vet is a bulldog specialist and checked him over really good. He'd lost 4 pounds since he'd been home. He had bloodwork and everything came back perfectly normal. He suggested we watch him and thought they could be seizures and if they increased, that he would probably put him on phenobarbitol. Thursday night his episodes were less severe, but he still had three of them. Last night, he seemed out of it and we thought that maybe letting him run the sprinklers at the house, which is one of his favorite things to do, would give us an indication if he remembered or wanted to play. He did play in the sprinklers and seemed to have a good time, although he was a bit slower than normal. He came in, we dried him off and my husband decided to sleep with him downstairs to see if a different sleeping arrangement would help with the episodes or seizures. When he laid down to sleep, his episodes were VERY frequent last night. He had them every few minutes from 9:00 - 3:00 this morning, then after that, one every hour. He woke up this morning, went outside and ate and is asleep downstairs, with no episodes. This is the first day we'll be home with him all day, so we're going to see if the seizures continue during the day. What's strange to us is that they happen at night, almost like he's having a nightmare. I can't help but wonder if this is separation anxiety and he was traumatized by being boarded. I just don't know. I can tell you that this bully boy is EXTREMELY attached to his daddy and he is on his lap from the time he gets home until bedtime and then sleeps with us at night. Could this last vacation and being away from us have caused this or does this sound like a seizure????? Our last bulldog, Bentley had seizures but they were the shaking, foaming kind and he was treated with phenobarbitol and never had another one. These seem so different, but sounds he makes breaks our heart! I know this is a long post, but I'm hoping someone might have some insight.
pinched nerve
sounds more like a pinched nerve in the back than seizures....waking in pain..slow sluggish....get some back x rays....i would get some metacam its a pain and inflammation has no steroids....and the i would start questioning the vet about any jusmping he did rough playing....
but i feel more pinched nerve
He hasn't seemed in pain
He hasn't seemed in pain during the day...that's what's so weird. It's only at night. This morning, he's been asleep on the chair with his favorite blankie and hasn't had one episode. Could a pinched nerve cause that type of reaction?
sounds like night terrors!
omg that is so scary! It is very odd that he is fine during the day. I know dogs dream, but do they have night terrors also? Maybe he really is freaked out about sleeping in the kennel instead of with his Daddy.

Wow, I'm going to research
Wow, I'm going to research that....never heard of thought of it! He's very attached to us, and so there could be something to that! Thanks for that input!
I agree with Cathy
I posted to you on the other board. Can you leave a night light on for him. He played yesterday and had fun and no problem. Only at night. Find out if he was left in the dark at the kennel at night. Also was he all alone with no other dogs? I think something tramatized him. You said he lost weight. Can you give him extra treats to get some weight back on him. I really think it has something to do with his stay at the vets.

I am going to vote night terrors....
Because it just does not sound like normal seizure behavior to me for some reason. I have little experience but what I have read...but this sounds like nightmares, not seizures.

I agree it sounds like night
I agree it sounds like night terrors to me. If he is fine during the daytime, then at night he has these episodes, it only makes sense. These little guys are very sensitive.
