I have a 10 year old bulldog that has started to have very frequent seizures (4 today) among some other ailments. He has server arthritis in all of his lower back, hips and an enlarged prostrate. We have been managing is arthritis with Rimadyl and Tramodol as needed for the past two years. I know he sounds like he is a broken down old man, but he still was able to get around. He has never ever whimpered or whinned from pain. But all of a sudden last week he stopped eating and drinking, started having seizures and has stopped all activity. He can't walk, but it appears to be coming from the seizures and not the arthritis. After several trips to the Vet, he want come out and say it but I can tell he is of the opinion that I should put him down. I just can't do it... not till I know I have no other choice. His major problem right now is the seizures. I suspect he has been having them all along and I just didn't know it.
After a lot of research online, I have opened a case with Pfizer reqarding the side effect of the Rimadyl... but my Vet doesn't agree that the medication is the issue. Not looking to lay blame on anyone or anything, just looking to save my beloved friend. I have stopped giving the Rimadyl just in case that is triggering the seizures and have increased the Tramodol for pain management.
After all of that rambling, I guess my question is... has anyone had success in treating seizures? I haven't been able to find a silver bullet in my searching that might help me.
Regards,
West
Yes, seizures can be controlled successfully
with phenobarbitol. Its something you should discuss with your vet. Is it possible that he is developing a brain tumor?
I wish you a ton of luck with your ole guy. I've been in your shoes more times then I care to count, I so cherish the older dogs.

you did right
i would stop both meds for at least 60 days...both are known to casue seizures...i use metacam it has no steroids and is great for pain...my older rescued bullies did great on it..... his system has come to a point that those pain meds are to much....and cant clear out of his system....rimidaly is known for casuing seizures and sound never be used long term,,,,and your vet should be testing his liver at his age.....
get him on some vit e and some cod liver oil....or even a good fish oil supplement...vit c is a natural pain reliever also.....some good fresh food becasue he is ten i would boil or bake him some chicken...some brown rice....add in some fresh veggies....his system needs a cleaning and needs to regain its strenght....
