Seeking advice for a friend (warning- graphic pic)

Hello,

A friend sent me a picture of her bulldog.  He is 3 1/2 and has always been very healthy, up until recently.  A few months ago, he started developing rapidly growing masses in his ears.  He's had 2 surgeries to remove them and the pathology reports say they were benign.  He has had a horrible double ear infection for around 8 months now and has been on prednisone and antibiotics.  She took him to the vet yesterday because she thought he had been attacked by a wild animal (see pic- below).  The vet took samples and sent them for testing because she fears it could be cancer.  Have any of you seen this before?  Any thoughts on what it could be?  Thanks in advance!

what kind of blood work is being done....

first of all i would suspect an allergy of some type....they should  try  a bland diet of burger boiled with brown rice..for 3 months.....ears are always the first sign of allergies.....

now the blood test...i hate to say this but it could be an auto immune defiency.....and from the looks of his shoulder this is what i would be worried about.....tell them to send the blood work out to a lab and have it tested for lyme....also a red cell count should be done....

i am sure they have done skin scrapping???

if this has progressed from ears to this....i might also suggest they go to a large university...that has more rescourses

i would also look at all the new chemicals they have been using in the house......something is attacking his immune system by the pictures....and pred will only make the problem worse...pred is only hiding the problem not solving it

Thanks, Judy.  I appreciate all of your advice.  I'm not sure what tests have been run besides sending out a sample to test for cancer.  I will pass along all of this information.

Happy Holidays!

It looks a bit like calcinosis cutis -

Which our first bulldog Rocky developed after long term use of prednisone.  A skin biopsy is done to confirm this.  But it really looks very much like what we experienced. Often caused by long term use of pred.   Spreads, gets easily infected, and is made WORSE by more prednisone.

If it turns out to be something immune system related...

Have them get him off Predisone and on vitamin c very quickly. They should at least be boosting his immune system no matter what the diagnosis is. I give Sophia a Cranberry pill with vitamin c in it daily to help her maintain a good urinary tract and help boost her immune system. I am sure this boy would at least benefit from vitamin c.

Your friend should go directly to a Dermatologist

They will get to the bottom of this much more quickly especially that it involves ears and skin. Best of Luck!
