Second day on raw!

Due to all the helpful replies I received, I decided to give Otis his first raw meal yesterday morning. I bought a large package of Primal chicken patties and about 15 bone in chicken breasts and grinded those up. So far I have only given him the Primal with some probiotics. He did throw up his first meal..but since then he has kept it all down and he had a nice firm poop this morning after breakfast! No hesitations with eating it..he didn't even think twice. Does anybody have an opinion on how long I should wait before adding some of the chicken I ground up? Primal is soo expensive, my plan was to get him used to raw food using premade, then add my own to the mix, and slowly replace the Primal with all homemade raw once we get the hang of this. Another question- We have a great interntional grocery store by our house which is where I bought his chicken..they also had pigs feet and pigs tail, chicken gizzards, livers or hearts..and pork liver. Is any one organ I listed better than another? What about pigs feet or tail? I'm not going to buy it now, just thinking ahead! All of the things I listed are cheap as well, just a dollar or two!! And we start basic obedience next thursday and it is a positive reinforcement class so I will need to come with plenty of treats, will it be okay for him to get treats that aren't raw? Any opinions on a good kind?

bone content watch the bone content

primal already has 10% bone in its patties....how much bone do you have in your ground up chicken...did you add any chicken with no bone to make it 10%   this is where you have to be careful its always ok for to much meat not bone!!!!!!   i am going to find the bone content of a chicken breast.....get soem beef stew its cheap right now and give some to your doggie with the primal....he'll enjoy that...the organs you listed are fine...mix them up...you want give a litle variety and organs are the best way....

as for pigs feet i'll show you a picture of charlie...BUT  after a pigs foot they get all meat no bone dinners for a week...10% of your diet is not that much....

charlie with a pigs foot...maybe once a month...they'll last two days..when they finsh for the day i put in the frig for the next day.....then one week all meat meals...pig foot is great for teeth cleaning.......

Thanks Judy, I wasn't taking

Thanks Judy, I wasn't taking the bone in Primal into account. Glad I posted this and didn't add any yet! I will get boneless meat to mix, and freeze what I grinded until later.

Audrey LOVES her pig's feet!

But she does not consume the whole thing. She just gnaws on it for a few days. And we do keep it in the fridge overnight.

get a picture!!!!! also when you do

your pig feet...do you still give bone that week...or do you go all meat???    charie eats his in two days then i do all meat... as that pig foot binds him right up!!!!!!!i have two new spina bifida pups 10wks and 5 months..oh they love pig feet...i got to get some pictures to post you......

when Audrey gets a pig's foot

she gets all meat. She really has a low bone requirement. She is one of those that gets diarrhea from too much bone.

So I try to give her egg shells for calcium a few times a month too. I will try to get a picture!

We get halved feet, and freeze them and I just give it tohet frozen. She LOVES them!

Yes! "I" do!

YUCK! LOL! I still feed them to her though. I won't touch it, I put a baggy on my hand and handle it as little as possible.

Audrey didn't care for beef tongue at all- which is just fine by me! Another YUCK!

Thanks for sharing! I will

Thanks for sharing! I will have to try a pigs foot sometime and see how he likes it. After reading the post about too much bone I went bought boneless chicken tenders.. which was noticeably more expensive. I'm new to this and am wondering how you guys get reasonablly priced boneless meat? Since most the diet is meat. I was going to try Costco and see if they had any good deals. Thanks!

we get the bulk of Audrey's meat from Costco

The prices have gone waayyyyy up for meat, but what can you do? We have NO selection of places to get meat, it is very frustrating. I can't even get

un-enhanced turkey.

Audrey gets the beef roasts and pork roasts. She also gets the trimmings off the huge filets my husband buys. Costco has not had the pork ribs the last few times he went, but when they do she gets those too. She gets lamb ribs-they are EXPENSIVE! She doesn't eat chicken though and lamb is the best bone for her.

I know Costco has cases of chicken that a lot of raw feeders get, just make sure to add boneless meat to it. You can use things like gizzards and hearts for the boneless meat too, you don't have to just get boneless breasts.

Audrey ALWAYS drags hers onto my beautiful chair

the one I paid so much money for and can't even see anymore because the dogs ALL immediately stole it and it has to be covered 24/7 with blankets.

I can't sit around and watch her eat it- it's so nasty!

and yep! we will do just about anything for healthy HAPPY dogs!

One more question about bone!

Sorry for all the questions! Today I went to Costco and bought 15lbs. of boneless chicken thighs. I also have some chicken thighs with bone that I ground up.. I read somewhere that a chicken thigh was roughly 21% bone. Does that seem right? If it does, could I feed my boneless thighs in the AM and add in 1 ground thigh with bone..and in the PM do just the boneless meat? I have NO idea how to figure out these percents.. I apologize! Otis is 9 months old and is about 60 lbs. if that helps.

so if its 21% bone you woud feed

two boneless meals......its a total of 10%.....so what i would do am bone in pm no bone then the next two meals no bone....dont get caught up on bone...i dont feed bone every day....i dont feed organs at every meal... but thats how i would do it ok.....

just ask any timr...some times i am not on this board for a day or two...you can always privtae message me with a question ok

CathyandAudrey's picture

I don't feed bone every day either

one lamb rib maybe 3 times a week.  When it's pork ribs they are cut with a meat cleaver and have lots of meat on them still, so little bits of bone in them in the am meal, until they're gone then skip a few days.
