My 6 month old bully has a bad rash between his eyes and forhead. I have made an apt. on Monday for the vet, not sure what it is. I am putting medicated powder on until then. The hair is also gone from this area. They started as just pimples and seem to have spread. Any idea what it could be? Thanks
Karen
At his age...
It could be decoded especially if he's had his rabies vaccine. Have your vet do a skin scraping. That will tell you for sure.
just came back from the vet
just came back from the vet they did scrapings and said he has mites. Gave me Ivomec and because of some infection Cephalex. I don't know how he got it. He had 2 small spots on his head when I at him at 9 weeks I put cream on it and they went away. This probably was the start of it and I just did not know it. I feel very bad that I did not know what it was. Hope the Ivomec works otherwise they have to dip him. Vet says not nice and very messy. Thanks everyone .
Karen, Demodex (mites or mange) is very common in...
short haired dogs. It is usually caused by a compromised immune system which happens when they are rehomed, get vaccines and teeth all at the same time. I would also put him on some supplements to boost his immune system along with what the vet is doing. One 500 mg Ester C daily, one Pet Tab multi vitamin, one 25 zinc, one vitamin E. These should all help. And I'm sorry about my first response, my Iphone thinks it can spell better than I can, decoded should have read demodex but I doubt if my phone has ever heard of that lol.
By the way...
my first bully had it in exactly the same place, between the eyes.
Rabies shot
Did he have his rabies shot with the last set of puppy shots around 16 wks? Many of us and all the breeders I know have in their contract to give the rabies at or after 6 months. It's just way to much going on at one time in the puppies life and it compromises the immune system. The Ivomection will work, I honestly would never do dips, but you have to be patient and give it time, a good 6 weeks. You should go back for additional scraping after 2 or 3 weeks.
All dogs have the mites...they just get out of control.
