Repeat Bacterial Infections/UTI

Hi there - does anyone have experince with thier bullies getting repeat bacterial infections?  Phatty has had them a few times and currently has another double bacterial infection in his urinary track.  They say it can be caused by licking their privates or by eating poo, but like all bullies, he cannot reach his privates, and he has never eaten any poo.  So, we're at a loss.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.   Also, has anyone added yogurt to their dogs diets to help boost the probiotic health?

Thank you!

Onslow has them but its bacterial skin infections

the vet and I agree that its due to seasonal allergies (for him) because as soon as we have a frost (and all through the winter months) he is fine and his food never changes as soon as spring hits he gets them.  Right now we just got over one and he was been on Cephalexin for about a month.  Yogurt is ok, but I would recommend a probiotic pill for your guy. I hope some other have some helpful insight for you and I also hope he feels better.

Hi. I feed a tablespoon of yogurt twice a day.

I get plain, fat free yogurt. I mix it right into their food. It helps my dogs a lot! I also give one cranberry gel with vitamin c in it every day. I buy Spring Valley brand at Walmart. It is labeled Cranberry Fruit 2000 mg plus Vitamin c. Very efficient in keeping UTI's away!

Did Sophia have problems with UTI's and bacterial infections before you started giving her the cranberry and yogurt? Have you heard of Nature's Pharmacy and thier pet products? Any luck with those probiotics?

Thanks for the info! :)

Sophia as well as my older Doberman girl both had UTI's

I have not tried the brand you mention. Since I started the yogurt and cranberry with vitamin c, neither of my girls has had a UTI. Both have been in good health now for over 2 years.

Good luck!

dogs dont get uti from eating poop!!!!

that makes no sense at all...what does one have to do with the other......more likely your boy is like mine and when their sitting their little dinky pops out and sits on the carpet or dirt floor and when they pull it back in their is dirt on it....i would do two things...first get a culture done and get on the right antibotic....some vets just shove over a antibotic  and its not always the right one for the infection.....then i would go to one vit v 500mg a day...in the pm and one cranberry tab in the am,,,,,yougurt has a bit to much sugar for dealing with a uti...so i would get a reg probitic tab from the pharmacy....and would also do a cod liver tab for high omega content.....

if doing yougurt check the sodium and sugar content....these can some times cause allergy problems.....

I give Fatboy Fage plain yogurt whenever he goes on antibiotics.

It helps his tummy because of all the gastrointestinal problems assocaited while taking meds.  I don't know if it will help a UTI but it's in that general area.  I know taking probiotics helps certain women's issues (sorry TMI) so it might help.  Fatboy loves yogurt too so he thinks he's getting an extra treat :)

If Phatty doesn't like it you can try to add a little bit of honey to it to sweeten it up a bit.  Plain yogurt is so sour tasting to me so I do this when I'm going to eat it with my apples (Fatboy loves it like this too lol)

Thanks for the advice!

We started Phatty on a probiotic from his vet today.  Found out that he does not need cranberry since he already has a very acidic urinie.  Generally dogs can use cranberry if they have an alcaline urine.  So, we have a different issue.  Hopefully his meds and the probiotic will be helpful soon!  :)
