My daughter was taking her Bullie in once a month--or more--to a vet to have anal glands expressed (vet told her that it needed to be done since her Bullie always had soft poops the anal glands were not emptying.) For other reasons she took her Bullie into a well known "Bullie" vet in Hayward, CA- He told her expressing anal glands was totally unnecessary: 1. they refill almost immediately 2. they don't overfill. Unless the gland is infected they don't need expressing. Frequent hand expressing can cause infection. Scooting is not caused by anal glands--possibly pin worms or other worms or even an itchy tail (Although his tail appears to be a nice tail he has a deep crevice or wrinkle and that was red and smelly=source of problem.) His advice: look for another problem. Rarely anal glands are at fault.

well that would explain.....
......... us bringing Tucker home after he's just had them expressed and him scooting right away. Our vet said that if they don't get expressed then they can get infected and that can be a major problem. So, how do I know if he has worms or is infected?? I know they can test for worms but Tucker's had this issue for a while and i'd think we would have found that out by now. Tucker doesn't have a deep tail pocket. Hmm, very interesting. Thanks for sharing the info. I guess some more investigation is in order :)

also...
.... it's like an oil that comes out. A stinky tail wouldn't keep expelling a fishy smelling oil, I wouldn't think but i'm no vet. Now you've got me thinking if i'm putting Tucker through this un-necessarily.
I'd love to hear other people thoughts on this info!

My two cents worth
Finding a different food might help and one that would that would firm up the stool. I have no scienctific conclusion, but I know, with our 8 year old bullie, that certain dog foods we have had her on, over the years, have caused her to have more anal gland stink. ALso, wondering if Tucker ever has any cherry eye problems? For us, when Matilda has had anal gland issues, her right eye would pop a cherry eye. Strange but true.

Hmmm, good idea
Maybe taking Tucker off the grain free food and putting him on reg food again would help. The food we have him on has a grain free and a couple reg food. I'm trying to think how long he's had the problems and how long he's been on the grain free. I hate switching food but we could give it a try. Tucker has never had a cherry eye issue. He had a fairly bad case of conjunctivitus once(over a yr ago), a couple tummy infections(from eating garbage on green bin day - umm garbage), one ear infection(my fault for getting water in his ears after a bath) and he did have a very light case of demodex and that was a fluke that they even caught it. The demodex was the last issue he had and that was about 4/5 months ago. He was on meds for a long time for that. So compared to others, he hasn't had too many health issues. I think the biggest issue we have dealt with is him eating stuff he shouldn't and then puking it back up! Not sure if anyone else has a dog who LOVES to eat sticks and mulch and grass after it's been cut!
Question, has anyone ever tried "summit" dog food??? The issue with food is that the protein level has to be low and nothing with any lamb in it cuz he gets extra stinky!

this is what i do...
i have never had the vet express kibbys glands before ( and i am psycho, so i did have the vet look too, but he says he didnt see any need for it) , but i am convinced that all dogs will get the squidy "booty juice" as we like to call it, every once in a while. sometimes, i notice it when one of dogs get startled.. or if we make a sharp turn in the car, or if kibby sits on the seat belt holder by accident.. so yes, i do think it does come more often when the poo is not hard enough to kinda "squeeze" out a little of the juice at a time.
so this is what i do every time when i give kibby a bath, like at petco, i save the booty hole cleaning for last... i literal take the petco towels and press gently but firmly around her booty hole, try to dig around, massage, under her tail, or tail pocket, whatever it is.. i try to pull out any loose hairs, i dont scrub, because i dont want to irritate it..clean the whole area...etc.. and then i spray it with the hose for like a good 5 minutes.. i am not sure if i am doing anything good ... but i don't have too many issues with the booty juice.. maybe like 1-2 a month if that. good luck.
sincerely, christine
