So amos's right eye has now had two surgeries correct a re occuring cherry eye and he is now 6 months. We are faced with having to have it corrected(with the pocket method) again but for the third time I am considering taking the tear gland out. I really wanted to stear away from this method because of much discouragment in it's possibility of inhibiting tear production, but It scares me to death to keep putting him under. Any thought on the surgery and what to do?
thanks so much

That is the problem
with trying to tack it, I've over the years heard it is common for it to pop back out and that tacking is not all that successful. IMO it should just be removed. I have yet to hear that removing it has caused anymore problems with dry eye then the normal lack of tears as the dog ages. I've had 2 dogs get dry eye and neither one of them had cherry eye surgery, infact I've never had to have a cherry eye surgery done. Cleo actually had limited tear production in one eye at a pretty young age, she'll be 7 in a couple of months.
My understanding is some vets will not remove it, you'll have to discuss that with your vet.
removal
Kippah had one removed at 6 months, quick procedure, easy quick recovery. We went in for a consultaion, he offered to do it right then if we wanted to since we had 2 feet of snow over 2 days and he had so many cancelations.
He only gave her a sedative and used locals, as we did not want her put under if there were other options. She went in at 10:30 and we picked her up at 12:30, she was sleepy that afternoon, and then that was that! All better.
The biggest decision factor for removal vs pocket was being able to have a sedative and local for the removal. But secondary was that the pocket is not always the end all solution.
