Raw Question/Butcher Shop

What do I ask my butcher for?  Yeah sounds silly right?  I have a few local shops around us that we are going to visit and get prices.  I have two dogs that I will be starting raw very soon.  I am currently getting all my ducks (ha! sorry) in a row before starting this process, also on my second book with Tom Lonsdale's book on the way I can't wait.  I'm a very soft spoken person and whenever I go in them places the meat guy always says, "hey hunny speak up,"  I get so darn embarrassed!!  Help me out :(

And omg can you believe this   8 ().....  Yesterday the guy that sits on the other side of the couch brought home a cleaver and a kitchen scale!!!  So charming, I melted like it was a dozen roses.

I would tell your butcher

what you are planning to do.

Chicken parts are the best to start with. Backs are a good bone to meat ratio. I also used miss cut chicken breasts. For me, those were the pieces that I felt the most comfortable with. In the beginning, I would use the cleaver to break up the bones somewhat before tossing to Kofi to enjoy.

Kofi has now got the idea of the raw chewing, so I can give her just the pieces. Some use chicken halves, etc. I am just a scardy cat, and proceeding in my own comfort zone. Carina's Raw Dog Food book has been such a great guide for me.

I have gone all over  town explaining to all the meat people what I need and why.

Just this afternoon I asked for kidney, and our best "gourmet market meat guy" looked at me in a

"vewwy scawwy" way.

Have fun! Your guys will love it!

As for the guy that you share the couch with.....why not shower him with your appreciation tonight...  ; o )

chicken is the best.....

some dogs at first wont like the raw and you can quick sear both sides...dont get hung up on bone...just get a decent feeding schdue going....most butchers wont work with less than a 50lb order for a good price...i get 100lbs to 150 a month i have 5 dogs i am feeding....i like beef heart 10% or your meal....i like chicken liver also i stay away from beef liver as wilson is very sensitive to it....meat is 80% of your meal bone is 10% and organs is 10%...you dont have to be prefect...remember this is fun...you and your dogs are going to enjoy this journey...their health will be better....

i also get beef stew...and use that its a pretty cheap meat....but chicken is my primary meat.... i have also scored out of date roast beef....the boys like those days!!!!!....my butcher saves me the saw shaving of bone and meal....this is like gold its very rich in bone and fat....after you get to know your butcher you can ask them to save you some.....take your time

and ask lots of questions...everyone here started just like you....

Poultry Shears

Almost better than a cleaver. Good for cutting thru chicken backs, etc. Good luck with your raw feeding. I've been at it for over 15 years and can't wait til my next bully comes to start her. As to the butcher, they can order pretty much anything for you, so if you give them a list in advance, say I would like to order a box of chicken necks (usually 40 lbs), so many pounds of whatever meat divided into 2 lb packages, etc. they can handle your account easier.

OMG! That is SO funny!

Sounds like the hubby is catching on. Mine knows the way to win we over is a big container full of chopped up meat in the fridge for my baby.

We are too easy!

The meat man says

$1.39/lbs for chicken necks and backs they come together packaged in whatever weight I want.  $1.99/lbs and they will grind it for me.....

What do we all think?

p.s.  They were so excited when we started asking questions in the store!  The guy said that they have a lot of customers who are coming in and buying bulk meat for their dogs now and they are expanding their recreational bones as well.

Seems high

Seems high for backs and necks that are mostly bone. ask for a discount if you buy more. I wait for sales on bone in breast or whole chicken and have the grocer quarter the whole ones. .77 a lb for whole chicken then they get all the good stuff that comes inside. Gizzards, livers....I usually buy 30lbs at a time. But recently bought another fridge. We were tired of sharing. Now I can stock more stuff as it goes on sale. I grind my own and store in plastic ziploc containers. Took a while till I got a process going. It gets easier as you go.....

I thought it was a little high as well

I only took 6 pounds that were not ground so I could see for myself what I was working with.  I know that the stores have chicken on sale often for 0.88 but it is leg quarters and this would be where that cleaver would come in extra handy.  For now I am working with what I can get, I got bone in chicken breast from the grocery store for 4.99 tonight.  I maybe paying a little more right now in the beginning but the more I learn and read about raw feeding and kibble the more irritated I am about kibble.  Chumlee had his first raw meal tonight.  He ate it like a champ of course and had some yogurt afterwards like it was his dessert.  He weighs 55 lbs and he got 8 oz. of chicken breasts with some bones chopped and beat with the cleaver.  He also got a couple gizzards.  He has been getting acidophilus probiotics for a few days.  Thoughts?  How did I do?  I'm considering ordering Grizzly salmon oil tonight.

Getting sleepy

And down he goes....ZZZzzzZZZzzzzzzzzz

Hi Carol

Yeah that chicken breast was only 3.5 lbs but it wasn't frozen and that is what I was shooting for lol.  He slept for about 45 minutes after he ate now he is chewing on his antler.  I can't take my eyes off him but I'm happy to see that he is being himself.

$.69 a pound

here for chicken backs and necks. I grind the necks, but give her the backs whole.

I think you should be able to beat that price.

that seems real high to me

for necks and backs. Definitely ask for better prices for bulk purchases!
