[[wysiwyg_imageupload::]]Ok, I am sooo intrigued by the raw food diet. I think about it ALOT!!! Could that be the cause of the stinkies, yeasties, excessive shedding, bumps, itching. etc.. etc.. I want to know your typical prep. Daily/weekly, frozen/fresh, grinding, storage. What is the typical cost per week/month. I am a single mother of 2 boys, 2 bulldogs, and work only part time. I want to see if this is at all possible for me to do. Grain-free was my next option. Any ideas?? Thanks!!
I'm going through the same
I'm going through the same evaluation right now. The sheds, the yeasts, the bumps, et cetera...
I haven't yet figured out the cost, but I'm sure it's not going to be cheap. So far, I've seen that it looks to be about 2 to 3 times the cost of regular although some brands are cheaper than others. That said, I wonder if the money spent on a "clean" diet for Matilda will result in less money spent in other places/trips to the vet, fewer purchases of allergy pills, etc...
And I may be able to go back to doing her nails myself rather than paying for it because it takes two people to hang onto her to do it! (and she used to let me!)
My parents also mentioned that there is a raw wholesaler here in the area and they might buy more for me if I wanted a specific brand; I am not sure if this would be an option for you to look into but it is somewhat cheaper. This of course would be after you have determined that your dogs are doing better on it :)
I will post whatever I learn. Apparently those who have made the full raw plunge (not buying packaged) have found ways to do it quite inexpensively just with stuff they get at the grocery store.
I am just the paranoid type who wants to get confident with this before I'm dropping a raw chicken wing and an egg into her bowl and hoping that goes well :)
I am new to raw feeding myself,
and I have not been too cost conscience. I continue to recommend a book Raw Dog Food Make it Easy For You and Your Dog by Carina Beth MacDonald. She breaks down the cost, and shows it to be less expensive for her dogs that commercial dog food.
I have been feeding Kofi raw since July 19. I had thought about it for quite some time, and since she had lost interest in her kibble, I took the plunge.
I began quite cautiously, and carefully, after reading extensively on this board and elsewhere.
I started Kofi on ground up chicken breast with veggies, raw egg, and some yogurt. She loved it! I swear that after two weeks I saw a difference in her coat and energy level.
I had to find what made me comfortable, and recommend that to others. When I do feed her whole raw chicken backs or breasts, I watch her carefully as she eats.
I think feeding raw is the ultimate.....but I really am not in the position to mentor yet.
Perhaps others with more experience will soon give you some advice.
Good health to you and your bullies!
I am pro raw:)
When I switched my bully over to a 100% raw food diet about 1 month ago we were dealing with yeast in his tail pocket, interdigital cysts, red spots on his body, ears red, paws itchy and loose stools. About 2-3 weeks into 100% raw, I have had NO problems. We haven't had to see a vet, no cysts, and no more red splotches. I am a big fan of the raw food diet and also know it can be a little intimidating to begin but I think it's really worth it for these kinds of dogs. Good luck with your raw journey!
