Just wondering if it is normal to experience vomiting when first fed the raw diet. I mixed half her old food, and half raw, with a sprinkle of probiotic powder. She threw up a tiny bit of it.
Riley is a rescue that is 3, and I've only had her a month, so not sure about her history with vomiting. With the Royal Canine, I only saw vomiting one other time.
why did you mix in the dry?
dont do that.....it takes longer for the stomach to process dry food than raw....what raw did you feed? chicken? did it have skin? keep the start very simple.....dont throw alot of additives to the food.....the only thing you need to add to a raw diet is a cod liver tab for the omega....
so if you feel you must fed the dry separte it from the raw....feed raw in the am and dry in the pm..... also did you feed any bone?
The woman who sold it to me
The woman who sold it to me told me to slowly work her over to raw. I was following her advice. It was chicken, and it was Bravo. Not sure if Bravo has the skin included.
As I was preparing her 2nd meal of the day, she had very liquid diarhhea on the floor of the kitchen. So I don't think the transition is going too well.
You think I should just give her a bowl of straight raw?
I just went to the Bravo
I just went to the Bravo site. They recommended a 10 day transition, but at the bottom, it did say some pets don't do transitions well and cold turkey is best.
Mine
Transitioned fairly well.
They throw up sometimes at first. And they re-eat it. That's pretty normal. Sometimes it won't go down and the "hork" it back up and chew a little more...lol If you are the worrying type, I think there is Heimlic Manuver info for dogs on the info page, but I've never needed it yet.
I buy the big bags of chicken quarters, and I cut off the leg, and at feeding time I chop the bones in the thigh, and along the spine, to make it easier for them to eat.
They seem to start raw well on small chicken legs cause the bone is kinda soft. I pulled the meat loose so they could get a bite the first time and they caught on quick.
They could chew up the bones themselves, but it's less mess for them if I hack it a little. I feed them this outside. Food like gizzards I just toss one at a time. Beef Liver I cut and freeze on wax paper then bag up to store in freezer cause I only feed a little like a treat....liver is strong stuff and the dog won't tolerate a lot at first with out getting the squirts.
The smaller thighs and legs they chomp right through.
Good Luck It seems everyday is easier as far as the raw feeding is concerned.

Mean people still suck
Is grinding the chicken
an option for you? I grind Dallas leg quaters (bone included). He is doin well on it. It's going on 3months for him.
using bravo.....
no dont transition over....i dont know why people think they need a transition.....but anyway...you need to get some chicken necks...feed one with the bravo a day till the poop is firm...their is not enough bone in the pre made....also bravo recommends a cod liver tab for the omega
as their is not enough natural omega in any raw diet..unless using a fresh fish.....
bravo is fine if you want to use a pre made raw diet.....just add in you chicken necks....and poop will firm up.....keep asking questions...were here to help...
Chicken necks?
Thank you so much!!! Truly appreciate it. So.... where would I find chicken necks? Do I need to buy the whole chicken? I can order from an organic meat coop, but that is only every few months. I will scrap the transition plan today!
I would rather not buy the pre made raw diet, as it is MUSH. I wouldn't want to eat it, if I were her. It can't be best for her teeth and gums either. So as soon as I get her runny butt figured out, and finish off what I bought, I'll be back asking questions!
Thank you, thank you!
Runs
Brother had the runs from too much liver once. The bone helps to dry out the poo some.
Runs too much organ, I think or meat. Also overfeeding will do that too. They love chicken necks, but they are mostly bone.
This morning Buddy and Brother got 2 small chicken thighs each and 1/4 of a Pet Tab Plus vitamin.
Probably a piece of beef liver for a small snack later....like maybe 1/16 of an ounce....just a guess.
And maybe a chicken leg for supper. And some chicken gizzards
We are still new, so I don't give them beef, and rich foods like pork yet.
I did grind, but I decided it took too much time and the dogs don't care, I do hit the big thighs with a hatchet to give the dog a little help so I don't have to stand outside all morning while they eat, but they do a lot of the chewing, and the biggest lump of fat, I remove some of it too on the big ones, the small tender thighs I fed this morning I just let them chew cause the spine part wasn't on them. Hence a thigh piece vs a hind Quarter, that means the back or spine part is included. Like I said the dog can chew it up, I'm just help for times sake.
Good luck...

Mean people still suck
bone will tighten the poop
good suggestion...give a chicken thigh....remove the skin for the first week...skin is rich and can give the loose poop.....your co op will have chicken and turkey necks just ask...even your bravo dealer might have a bag of chicken necks...
also to tighten up fast use some canned pumpkin....
Hunting
I drove all over Houston and to some dangerous areas looking for chicken necks. I gave up and bought a few whole chickens, as they said the neck was inside. I am so frustrated right now. No chicken neck inside!! So glad to hear that I can give her a thigh. I fed only the raw and the probiotic powder today and now will give her a thigh.
Thanks everyone for the interesting and helpful solutions.
darn...do a thigh or chicken wing
chicken wings are pretty boney also......go on line look up vitalessenitals.....its a pre made raw but they have chicken necks.... how is the poop...also are you doing pre made raw or your own raw mixture.....
found them
I was feeding her Bravo pre made food with added probiotic/enzyme powder and some pumpkin. She doesn't even want to eat it!!! My 3 labs don't want it either... which shocked me. I was only going to switch her over to raw, but when she didn't want it, I tested it on them. I also offered the 3 labs a chicken thigh and none of them wanted it. Thank goodness the bulldog DID eat the thigh. I thought that the more natural, the more they would want it. I did find a source for necks so will be getting those tomorrow. She still has a very runny butt! Concerning as I am not sure how long she should be left with this diarrhea.
we did cold turkey change
Audrey had been vomiting her kibble every single day so I figured we had not much to fear anyways. She never once vomited up her raw Primal.
We used double the dose of probiotics/digestive enzymes at first, and now only use them if she does get the occasional loose stools. They really do seem to help.

Probiotics/Enzymes
I hope we will have the same success. Good idea on the probiotics.
chicken necks!
Sometimes you can find chicken necks at Mexican Markets. They use alot of those organ parts to cook " Menudo"( chicken soup) Good luck~
