Raw feeders

I was wondering what people who feed raw add to the dogs diet in the way of vitamins?

I give raw frozen liver and a small pump of salmon oil.   I have some PetTabs - Plus but they seem to hype the boys up.

I'm gonna start on something in pill form cause I find the fish oil makes their breath smell, and one of the best parts of a raw diet for the human is the fresh breath on your dog.

So I figure some fish oil caps and vitamin C and maybe E.  Any ideas?

They mostly eat raw chicken hind quarters and some raw beef liver....

Hi Steve,

Kofi has been on raw for 1&1/2 years. I have ceased giving her vitamins. She does get a varied diet, and salmon every week.

On another raw food site, most ceased the vitamins. I still have NuVet Plus tabs, and wild salmon oil, but seldom use.

I'm comfortable with this, but you may want to research before you make such a decision.

Hugs to your guys!

Thanx Carol

I noticed a small red place on Buddy's neck and Brother poked his shoulder on a stick or something making it look like their skin and coat might need some attention.  So I figured maybe it was vitamins they needed.  I used hot spot stuff with tea tree oil in it.

Anytime ya see a bloody spot on a white dog ya freak.  But Buddy had licked it some and made it look like a skin type sore not a stick poke.

Soon they are gonna get some good stuff from a place nearby that sells farm raised flesh from a farm in Michigan....ducks, bison, rabbits....I'm scared but I want to give them rabbit heads...lol, alpaca, beef, chicken, turkey all hormone free and no additivies after slaughter, and great stuff they call Super-mix where they grind the parts into a planned mixture to feed.

This morning, they shared a pack of Purdue gizzards and a Chicken leg each and a frozen piece of beef liver.

my suggestions

get rid of the salmon oil...read the ingredients...way to many chemicals...use fresh fish twice a week.....dont use vit e and and other things like the salmon oil together not healthy....i use cod liver tabs only...and i add fresh sardines every two weeks...and i use fresh caught salmon once a week.....

i use vit c only as a pain reliever in my old dogs...and to help with uti's in my spina bifida dogs.....its a vit the unlike humans dog make on their own...but what is nice about vit c is it is a water soluable vit and any excess is flushed out with the kidneys,,,,,,

better to use fresh ingredients than store bought additives.....

Thanx Judy

I'm gonna look for fresh sardines...fresh fish is pretty high in Indianapolis...the kind I'd want to feed my dogs anyway.  But I'll call the fish marts and see what I can get.

I already know canned fish is too much salt and farm raised is not like ocean caught fish....

I think I'll add some cod liver tabs, .

hello:)

I also feed raw and stick with variety in order to make sure my pup gets all of his vitamins :)  I do supplement with probiotics and digestive enzymes though.  Also, you had mentioned vitamin c but I don't think dogs need external sources of vitamin c.  I believe that their liver makes it independently (unlike humans)and they do not often need supplementation.  I have seen a video on www.bulldogintheraw.com  and it was a vet talking about raw diets and what is good for supplementation.

Hope this helps:)
