I am debating the switch to a raw diet and was hoping to get some information from fellow bulldog owners. I am afraid to venture out and start preparing his diet on my own, I don't want to mess it up or leave out a critical ingedient he needs. The thought of feeding him raw bones also scares me! And the bones seem to be an important part of the raw diet. Is there a big difference between grinding the bones and feeding them whole? Do you cut the meat up, grind it, feed it in large chunks? And what else should be added to the meat..veggies, vitamins etc.? How do you make the transition from dry food to raw meat? To be honest, my bulldog seems to have a sensitive stomach, and it is not uncommon for him to have a lose stool if he gets a special treat or something. I have been adding a little scoop of pumpkin and a dab of nonfat organic yogurt to his dry food to help him digest. I am wondering if I feed him raw and change his meat source regularly if he will be able to handle that. Does it take them a while to get used to it? Do you change the meat source every meal, every few days, week? Do most people prepare the meals in bulk and freeze the leftovers? He has those awful tear stains and has been chewing his feet a little lately..any chance a raw diet helps with the itchiness or stains? (tried filtered water, no luck)I know thats a lot of questions! And there are books that can answer them for me, but I feel that bulldogs are special and what works for others may not work for them..so just thought I would see what other bulldog owners are doing as well as read the general guidelines. Also- My boy is almost 9 months old and a bit over 60 lbs..how do you decide how much to feed them? I assume he needs a little extra because he is still a growing boy. ANY information is greatly appreciated!!! I want to know as much as I can before I venture out to the store and make is first meal. Thanks!
its very easy....their are quite a few of us here....
.....if you want to make your own vs a commerical blend.....its 80% meat...10% bone....10% organs.....you would feed 2 to 3% of expected adult weight....
as for grinding or whole pcs i leave that up to the person.....i see nothing wrong with grinding....my dogs like to chew and it cleans their teeth...i use lamb rib bones....once or twice a week...plus i feed pig hocks that have alot of bone.....i go by my dogs stool if their really loose i add bone...to firm i dont feed bone....
dogs dont digest vegetable and their no benefit...except medical herbs i add to my dogs diet.....
most people start with chicken as its inexpensive and easy to start with......stay with it for at least a month...then add in what ever you would like.....
i just brought to my home two spina bifida puppies 10 wks and 5 months...they came last night and got their raw dinner...they loved it.....i dont do a transition for any rescues that come to my home...i may lightly sear it the first couple of times...to make it seem good to an older dog.....i do use my chinese wok to give things a quick stir...just for their and my enjoyment.....
i only use cod liver tabs for the omegea...i also use sardines fresh and wild salmon once or twice a month.....
as for doggie poop remember that kibble uses a stool firmeer in their ingredients....a dogs poop should not always be hard and formed...they should differ every now and then from what their eating.... kibble takes alot to digest vs raw...raw is much easier on the dogs stomach,,,,,,
just keep asking questions......and have fun with it...you become much more involved in your dogs life when you feed raw as you have to think about it....and interact with the dog...instead of putting down a bowl.....
Thankyou for your detailed
Thankyou for your detailed response.. it was very helpful! So the bones don't necessarily need to be given full with every meal? I would prefer to chop/grind the meat/bones and give a whole bone sporadically.. would that be okay? If I start with chicken, what would be the best part(s) to get? And how do I get organs? Are certain ones better/worse? If I supplement fish into his diet after the period of adjusting him to the raw diet, is it still necessary to give fish oil or tablets? And what type of herbs do you use on your dogs food? Again, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
what makes you the most comfortable
chop or grind ...most people will start with grinding and then as they get more comfortable...feed larger chunks....i find hearts...liver...at the grocery store or my butcher....just make sure nothing is enhanced...no sodium or very little.....start with a chicken breast..most dogs like that...right stew beef is preety cheap also....and the chunks are big enough for my dogs....oragns are organs i find the least expensive...and the point of raw is variety...i just found some beef tounge...thats stuff is tough and was a good chew for the gang...but it was something for this month....i always cod liver tabs to my chew makes them shiny and much less shedding......and i only do fish once a week or when i can afford it!!!!!
.thats fine to grind your bones remember its only 10% of the meal thats a small amt....i posted a few months back the % bone in chicken see if you can find it...if you cant let me know and i will repost it......
charlie with his pig hock..lots of bone and teeth cleaning....has all meat meals for the next week
Two SB Bullies here
Im starting the foray into raw with these two. I have them on Sojos dehydrated raw. Im illiterate when it comes to raw. So can you help out a person here. I need Raw for Dummies. lol
agree!
I feel the same way! I've been debating the switch for a while, but i am nervous to take the plunge! The organ/bone/meat ratio scares me.
i have 6 sb with the addtion of two from montana raw
its very very easy.... what i tell people is....just do it on the weekend to start...if your making your own...commerical...dump the kibble and jump right in...everything is pre measured the two i like...instinct...and bravo...on a raw diet you always need to add in cod liver tab..or salmon oil as pure as possible.....
so wilson is about 52 lbs and get 1 to 1 1/2 lbs a day......i adjust to how thin or fat he is getting.....remember your not feeding all those fillers that are in kibble...chicken is the best to start with its cheap and easy...just do some breast....give some hearts.....organs i like lamb or calf liver....i love chken necks and turkey necks nice and bony and i can give them as healthy treats...good for bone content....its not written in stone...not every meal i feed is exactly 80/10/10.......i feed twice a day...easier on my sb crew.....so in the am no organs just meat...then in the pm organs no meat a couple of chicken necks.....some sardines maybe......my feeding routine changes all the time.....
the important thing is no enhanced meats...watch those sodium levels and any additives.....so this saturday morning give your dogs a small chicken breast nothing else for breakfast......buy some cheap chiken gizzards.....a little afternoon snack.....just a coupl..if your butcher has some a couple of necks no more than two to start...once you see everything is ok...do it sunday...build your confidence up....dont try to do everything...when your not comfortble......if you want an exact feeding schudule let me know and i will give you one to follow......
I really appreciate all of
I really appreciate all of your help.. I have read a few books on it, went through what seems like hundreds of old posts on here, and tons of websites. What I am finding discouraging is that some information seems to vary so much which can be confusing. I read to start with chicken back because of high bone content to keep the poops firm? Or do you think the chicken breast is a better idea? And would I get boneless chicken breast or..with bone? Like I said, the thought of watching Otis eat a raw hunk of meat with bone in it might be enough to give me a heart attack, so can i chop it? At least until i am comfortable with his capabilities. He scarfes everything down as if he has never seen food before..which is enhancing my fears. Is it okay to chop meat witht he bone? or would the bone be dangerous is small pieces? We have a small hand grinder but I'm not sure how well it would grind bone.I will have to take a look at it again and see. I was also going to ask you if you think I should put him on probiotics for this transition? I actually am able to be home most of the day with my job right now..so I feel like this is a good time for me to start. I have a lot of time to prepare and monitor him while we get accustomed to this. If you would be willing to give me a feeding schedule to follow that would be very much appreciated! My biggest fear is starting without a plan and having to resort back to kibble..so I am trying to be as knowledgeable as I can without ever having fed a dog raw before! Thanks again!
how r my sb babies doing?
I'm trying not to look at their pictures because it's making me miss them sooo... much ! Hope they are adjusting well,.
Yes Please
Can you give me a copy of your feeding schedule?
You got the puppies rescued
So glad it all worked out.
Feeding Schedule
I'm not sure anyone that feeds raw has a real feeding schedule. I belong to a co-op so I feed whatever is stocked in my freezer. We have a database and different meats come up on the calendar every couple of months. I'm lucky to have such a wonderful raw co-op.
So here is what I usually feed. I do not feed whole bones of any kind. I had a bad experience and almost lost a dog feeding course ground chicken that I was buying. The problem was I did not know the bone content and my dog was not digesting any of those bones...they were going right through to his colon and he got impacted. Lots of sharp bones, he was lucky that his colon did not puncture. Just my experience.
So I grind my own Whole chickens and the bones are pretty non existent. I also get chicken necks that I grind with skin on. I feed chicken often because it is the least expensive protein. I get whole chickens from Costco and only Washington Foster Farm chickens with no additives.
From the co-op I get:
Ground Venison, Venison Scrap, Ground Beef, Green Tripe, Organ meat blend, Sardines, Buffalo. I can also get duck, lamb, rabbit, pork...but I have not ventured on to those yet. They are more expensive. There are also meat and vege blends if you like and sometimes I do get the vege blends.
There are a number of raw food businesses/companies that our co-op uses, and we get great prices because of the volume of orders.
I always feed 2 protein sources (ie chicken with either beef or venison)
I use liquid Glucosomine and Salmon oil. I will try Cod liver after my salmon oil is gone, for a change. Coconut is evidently good as well.
I save egg shells and crush them in my food processor. Haven't given whole eggs yet but many do.
I have 60 lbs of Vension Scrape coming in a couple of weeks, just picked up 20 lbs of whole fresh frozen 7" sardines, the chicken necks came in a 30 lbs...so you can see it is large volume that we buy.
Tonight my dogs are getting...ground chicken, venison, 1/2 sardine, plus the supplements.
Too keep their gums good they get bison or beef marrow bones to chew on, which they love....and they are also big chewers on their nylabones.
Thanks for the information!
Thanks for the information! Do you grind the chickens yourself? I am interested in grinding the meat and offer bones sporadically.. What type of a grinder do you have? Thanks!
Grinder
I do grind myself. I bought a grinder from Cabela's, I had a gift card that needed to be used so that is why I got it from there, and my sisters bf who is a hunter had the same grinder and was happy with his. So far it has done fine with the chicken. It is a little time consuming. I usually do 4 or 6 chickens at a time and freeze them in containers that hold about 2 lbs. But I'm told it is important to have a variety of protein sources so that is why I always fed something else with the chicken.
